One of the big surprise names to enter the transfer portal on Monday was Miami defensive tackle Darrell Jackson, who started every game this season for the Hurricanes.

And according to his mother, the talented lineman now intends to transfer closer to home and join the Florida State Seminoles.

Lisa Jackson, who lives in nearby Quincy, Fla., told CaneSport on Monday that her son is expecting to get a waiver to play right away for the Florida State Seminoles. Jackson would need special clearance from the NCAA because he has already transferred once — from Maryland to Miami after the 2021 season — but she said the family believes it will be approved.

Lisa Jackson said her son wants to be closer to home because she is ill and facing a major surgery. She added that her son isn’t necessarily unhappy with the Hurricanes.

“I love them. They’re good people,” the mother said of UM’s coaches. “They were doing a great job. He just wants to be closer to me.”

Darrell Jackson recorded 27 tackles, three sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss this past season for the Hurricanes. He is listed at 6-foot-6 and 300 pounds.

Jackson was high school teammates with FSU defensive tackle Joshua Farmer at Gadsden County High, where they played for former Seminole great Corey Fuller. Fuller is now in a support staff role at Florida State.

Florida State is definitely losing one starting defensive tackle after this season, as Robert Cooper has exhausted his eligibility. Fabien Lovett has not announced a decision after his junior season, but he did participate in Senior Day festivities before the Florida game, so there is speculation he will leave for the NFL.
