The weekends have been going just fine for the No. 5 Florida State baseball team.

The Tuesdays, however, have been a bit dicey lately.

The Seminoles, who fell to Florida a week ago, lost their second straight midweek game at Dick Howser Stadium on Tuesday night in a 9-3 defeat at the hands of Mercer.

Florida State falls to 18-2 on the season.

Starting pitcher Payton Manca gave up a two-run homer in the first inning, and the Seminoles trailed for the rest of the game as the offense failed to produce much of anything other than a Max Williams’ three-run homer in the sixth inning.

Mercer scored two in the first, one in the second and three in the third to take a 6-0 lead on the Seminoles. And the game never really got closer than that.

Mercer starting pitcher Jeb Johnson was dominant for most of his outing, pitching five scoreless innings before finally running into Williams’ bat in the sixth. All told, Johnson allowed three hits and three runs while striking out nine in 5 2/3 innings of work.

The rest of the Bears’ staff silenced the Seminoles the rest of the way as Mercer improved to 15-7 on the season.

Florida State managed just three hits in the loss and struck out 14 times.

Of the eight pitchers who took the mound for the Seminoles on Tuesday, only two — Connor Hults and Peyton Prescott — didn’t allow at least one run.

The Seminoles start a three-game series at Miami on Thursday night.
