All in all, Sunday in South Bend, Ind., was a really good day for the No. 4 Florida State baseball team.

Coming off a 16-9 loss to Notre Dame in the series opener on Friday, the Seminoles took both ends of a doubleheader against the Fighting Irish on Sunday to improve to 23-4 overall and 7-2 in the ACC.

The ends of that doubleheader couldn’t have been much more different, however. The Seminoles beat Notre Dame 4-2 in Game 1 and then used an early offensive barrage in Game 2 to knock off the hosts 17-9.

Joey Volini was terrific on the mound for the Seminoles in the first game of the day. After allowing a run in each of the first two innings, he went scoreless over the next five to pick up the complete-game victory (by ACC rules, the first game of a doubleheader on a travel day is limited to seven innings).

He allowed just four hits and two runs while striking out 11 to pick up the win on the mound.

The Seminoles didn’t get a ton of offense in the game, but they managed to score just enough to pick up the road victory. In the fourth inning, Brody DeLamielleure ripped an RBI double to left to tie the game at 2-2. He then came around to score on an RBI groundout by Gage Harrelson (after a sacrifice bunt by Cal Fisher) to give the Seminoles the lead.

Harrelson then added to that one-run advantage in the seventh with a home run to right field.

Volini made the two-run lead hold up in the bottom of the inning as Florida State took Game 1 despite generating just three hits from the offense.

Then came the second game. And there were a whole lot more than three hits.

Florida State scored 14 runs in the first three innings and had a 16-3 lead in the sixth before the Fighting Irish started chipping away. They scored five in the sixth and one more in the seventh before the FSU bullpen finally was able to right the ship and pitch two scoreless innings to end it.

The surprise star for the offense on Sunday was redshirt freshman James Hankerson Jr., who was making the first start of his Seminole career and only had five at-bats all season. The switch-hitter had three hits in the game, including a massive home run that was measured over 470 feet, and drove in six runs to lead the Seminoles’ offense.

Alex Lodise had another Alex Lodise game, with three hits and two home runs and four runs scored. Max Williams also added three hits, including a homer. Drew Faurot and Myles Bailey each added two hits for an offense that got at least one base hit from everyone in the lineup.

Carter McCulley had a two-run homer in the second inning as well for the Seminoles, who hit five bombs in the game and 12 in three-game series. Williams leads the team with 12 on the year. Lodise has 11.

As for the Florida State bullpen in the second game of the doubleheader, Peyton Prescott had another outing to forget. He gave up five hits and three earned runs in just one inning of work after also struggling on Friday. Joe Charles was also touched up for two runs in just 1 1/3 innings of relief for starter Wes Mendes, who struggled for the second straight outing.

Staked to a 14-0 lead, the Ole Miss transfer couldn’t get out of the fourth, allowing three runs and six hits while walking six in a 95-pitch outing.

John Abraham, Chris Knier and Payton Manca closed out the game for the Seminoles, allowing just two hits and no earned runs over the final three innings.

Florida State returns home to play Jacksonville on Tuesday evening before welcoming in Wake Forest for a three-game series over the weekend.
