It wasn’t ever easy. And it came down to the final strike. But the No. 4 Florida State baseball team held on for an 11-10 victory over Jacksonville on Tuesday night at Dick Howser Stadium to improve to 24-4 overall on the season.

With the tying run on second base after a two-out, two-run double in the top of the ninth inning, Ben Barrett came on for a beleaguered FSU bullpen and struck out the only batter he faced to preserve the win and record his first save of the season.

Barrett was the seventh pitcher of the night for the Seminoles, who had to use two to get out of the first inning alone. Starter Hudson Rowan recorded just one out before being pulled after three walks and an infield hit, Maison Martinez then gave up a three-run homer to the second batter he faced to put FSU in an immediate 5-0 hole.

Two innings later, though, the Seminoles were leading 6-5.

Max Williams hit a two-run homer in the first, James Hankerson Jr. hit a 460-foot homer in the second, Alex Lodise and Myles Bailey each had RBI singles, and Bailey also scored on a wild pitch as Florida State took a 6-5 lead into the third.

Jacksonville tied the game on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the third and then took the lead on an RBI single in the fourth.

But the Seminoles responded with three in the bottom of the fourth: Williams hit his second homer of the game and 14th of the season, Brody DeLamielleure had an RBI double off the screen, and Drew Faurot added an RBI single.

Alex Lodise then added a two-run single in the seventh as the Seminoles took an 11-8 lead and then held on for dear life in the nineth.

Of the seven pitchers Florida State used, the most effective, by far, was lefty Brady Louck, who allowed just one run in three innings. He didn’t walk a single batter.

The rest of the FSU staff walked a total of 11.

Florida State’s offense was led by Williams’ two homers. Bailey added three hits, and Lodise, Gage Harrelson and Faurot each had two hits.

The Seminoles return to ACC action on Friday night at 8 p.m. when they host Wake Forest for the first of a three-game series at Dick Howser Stadium.
