As legendary FSU baseball coach Mike Martin Sr. used to say on occasion: “Sometimes you’re the bug, and sometimes you’re the windshield.”

On Saturday afternoon, the No. 4 Florida State baseball team was the bug.

Joey Volini, who had been nearly unhittable in his previous two starts, was lit up by a struggling Wake Forest team Saturday afternoon, and the Seminoles could never recover in an ugly 12-0, seven-inning run-rule loss at Dick Howser Stadium.

Volini, who came into the game with a 7-0 record and a 1.25 ERA in 43 1/3 innings pitched, was hammered through 2 1/3 innings by the Demon Deacons. He gave up 10 hits, five extra-base hits and seven earned runs before finally being taken out with one out in the third inning.

Wake’s Jimmy Keenan homered to right center in the second inning and then Dalton Wentz broke the game open with a three-run homer to left-center on an 0-2 pitch in the third. Wentz and leadoff hitter Matt Scannell each had four RBIs for the Demon Deacons, who are now 22-10 on the season and 8-6 in the ACC.

FSU falls to 25-5 overall and 8-3 in the ACC.

The Seminoles’ offense had no answer for Wake Forest starting pitcher Logan Lunceford either.

The righty allowed zero runs and just three hits in 5 2/3 innings of work on Saturday. He struck out nine and walked two to earn his fifth win of the season. The only real threat he faced all game was in the bottom of the second when Cal Fisher reached on a two-out error and Jaxson West followed with a single to center and then advanced to second on the throw to third.

But freshman Hunter Carns struck out swinging on a 3-2 pitch to end the frame.

Wake then scored 9 runs over the next two innings, and the game was all but over at that point.

Payton Manca allowed just one run in three innings of work out of the bullpen for FSU, but his performance was much too late to make any difference.

Gage Harrleson had two of the Seminoles’ three hits. The other one belonged to the aforementioned West, who then left the game after injuring himself on a swing.

The rubber match of the three-game series will be played on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
