Link Jarrett didn’t make it to the end of Sunday’s series finale between the Florida State and Boston College baseball teams, and he might have been the lucky one.

Jarrett’s Seminoles were sloppy in the field, and largely ineffective on the mound and at the plate. And the result was an 8-2 victory for the visiting Eagles.

Seven of Boston College’s eight runs were unearned, as Florida State’s defense was charged with four errors — three by senior third baseman Nander De Sedas.

De Sedas, who normally starts at second base, has played third this weekend due to an off-field injury sustained by freshman Cam Smith.

“Personnel-wise, we’re clearly not 100 percent, but you still have to go play clean baseball,” said Jarrett, who has been without starting center fielder DeAmez Ross in recent weeks due to a hand injury. Florida State also has had West Virginia transfer McGwire Holbrook, a projected starter at catcher or designated hitter, available for just one game all season.

With the win, the Eagles continued their surprising start to the 2023 season. After posting a 5-25 record in ACC play last season, BC is now 4-2 in the conference and 14-3 overall. The Eagles also won their conference-opening series last weekend at then-No. 10 Virginia Tech.

Florida State falls to 12-8 and 3-3. The Seminoles have now lost five of their last six.

After dropping Saturday’s late game, FSU got off to a solid start Sunday morning, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. But that would be the only run the Seminoles would score until they added one more in the bottom of the ninth.

Meanwhile, FSU starting pitcher Carson Montgomery didn’t make it out of the third inning. He only gave up three hits and one earned run in 2 2/3 innings, but the junior also walked three and threw three wild pitches.

Jarrett said the Seminoles were hoping for a big performance from Montgomery because of how sharp he looked during a midweek bullpen session. He and pitching coach Chuck Ristano thought it was the best the junior looked since they arrived last summer.

“Clearly it wasn’t as good in a game as it was in his training,” Jarrett said, adding that Montgomery complained of having a difficult time gripping the baseball Sunday on a cold, windy day.

For the second consecutive day, the Seminoles couldn’t come through with a clutch hit offensively. They finished with 11 hits, but they stranded 13 runners on base and struck out 12 times.

Ross did return to the lineup on Sunday and went 1-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. But because his hand injury still is inhibiting his ability to throw, he was limited to a DH role.

Jarrett was ejected in the seventh inning after one of several heated conversations with home-plate umpire Brandon Henson.

Florida State returns to action Tuesday night at home against rival Florida. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
