The Florida State men’s basketball team’s dreams of reaching the NCAA Tournament — and almost certainly its hopes of playing any more games this season — came to an end Thursday at the ACC Tournament.

One day after looking sharp in a second-round victory against Virginia Tech, the Seminoles were trounced by No. 1 seed North Carolina in the quarterfinals in Washington, D.C., 92-67.

The game was close early, but the Tar Heels blew things open with a 12-0 run late in the first half, and they kept rolling from there. They were up by 22 early in the second period and led by as many as 27.

With the win, UNC improves to 26-7 and moves on to the conference semifinals. Florida State sees its season end at 17-16.

FSU was led offensively by junior guard Primo Spears with 17 points, but the Seminoles struggled in all phases. They were embarrassed on the boards, as North Carolina came away with a 48-22 edge in rebounds, and they shot just 41 percent from the floor while the Tar Heels shot 52 percent.

UNC was led by senior guard RJ Davis’ 18 points and three others in double-figures.

FSU star Jamir Watkins, who set a career high with 34 points Wednesday, scored 12 against the Tar Heels. He connected on 3 of 11 shots from the field.
