Tempers flare after FSU pulls off 82-70 win over Pitt (with video)
Emotions were high from the opening whistle of Wednesday night’s game between the Florida State men’s basketball team and the Pitt Panthers.
There was plenty of chirping and chippiness throughout.
But it boiled over during the handshake line following the Seminoles’ 82-70 win over the visitors, who seemed to take umbrage with Malique Ewin throwing down an uncontested dunk with two seconds left when no Pitt defenders had even bothered crossing halfcourt.
It punctuated a night of frequent jawing between Ewin and players and coaches on Pitt’s bench. The game also featured very physical play and a slew of hard fouls.
Ewin and multiple Panthers, including head coach Jeff Capel, had to be restrained during the fracas that spilled over toward the tunnel near the Florida State locker room exit.
There was plenty of pushing and finger-pointing, but there didn’t appear to be any punches thrown between the two teams.

Capel could be seen talking to a few of the Florida State players right before the skirmish began. And while it didn’t ever get overly violent or ugly, there was definitely some major animosity between the two squads after what was a physical, emotional, talkative game.
Ewin finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Pitt was called for 17 fouls in the second half alone. All told, there were 42 fouls whistled by the referees and 55 combined free throws.
Florida State improves to 12-5 and 3-3 in the ACC, while Pitt falls to 12-5 and 3-3.
After the game, Capel left the post-game press conference without waiting for any questions from the media.
FSU head coach Leonard Hamilton said he didn’t see the altercation because he was going to shake hands with Pitt players, but he added that if any of his players need to be disciplined, that will happen quickly.
