UPDATES: What we're hearing on Alabama interest in Florida State coach Mike Norvell
Florida State coach Mike Norvell was among the first names mentioned by national media when news broke Wednesday evening that legendary Alabama head coach Nick Saban was retiring.
And the Crimson Tide’s potential interest in Norvell doesn’t appear to be dampening.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel and the Action Network’s Brett McMurphy both reported early Thursday that Norvell and Oregon coach Dan Lanning are likely the top candidates to replace Saban, and Lanning announced around noon on Thursday that he is staying put.
On3’s Andy Staples, a longtime college football reporter, told Warchant’s Jeff Cameron during an interview Thursday for the Jeff Cameron Show that he believes Norvell could be Alabama’s top target, with Lanning out of the running. And he thinks the Florida State coach will be tempted.

“It’s a tough, ‘No,’ if you’re Mike Norvell,” Staples said, pointing out that the Florida State coach just saw his program get leapfrogged by two current/future SEC teams — Texas and Alabama — for the College Football Playoff.
Is Norvell really the Crimson Tide’s top candidate? How strongly would he consider that job? And how concerned should Florida State’s fans be?
Publisher Gene Williams and the Warchant staff are posting updates of what we’re hearing in this thread on the Tribal Council.
