It’s time to look ahead to the 2023 Florida State football season with Warchant’s annual list of the Top 40 players on the Seminoles’ roster — the players we expect to make the biggest impact for FSU this fall. (Note: This is not necessarily the 40 most talented players, but the players we believe will have the opportunity and capability to make the biggest impact this season.)

The list was compiled through voting by Warchant’s Gene Williams, Ira Schoffel, Corey Clark, Jeff Cameron, Aslan Hajivandi and Tom Lang.

The Top 40 concludes today with player No. 1.

Earlier Installments: Players No. 36-40 | Players No. 31-35 | Players No. 26-30 | Players 21-25 | Players 16-20 | Players 11-15 | Players 6-10 | Player No. 5 | Player No. 4 | Player No. 3 | Player No. 2

No. 1 — Senior QB Jordan Travis

Not much drama in this one, folks.

When you’re one of the best players in the country and you play the most important position in team sports, well, you’re likely going to be No. 1 on this list — the most important player on the Florida State football team.

Heading into 2022, there were still plenty of doubters about Jordan Travis and his ability to be a consistently good college quarterback. Over the next 13 games, he didn’t just prove he could be a good one, he showed that he could be great. And one of the very best in the country.

Travis finished the season with 3,214 yards passing and 24 touchdowns — against just five interceptions. He also rushed for 417 yards and seven touchdowns as well. He was the highest-graded FBS quarterback by Pro Football Focus and the highest-graded ACC offensive player overall. His 32 total touchdowns (he also had a 2-yard receiving score) were the third most in FSU history, and he became the only Seminole to ever throw for at least 20 TDs and run for seven.

In short, Jordan Travis showed he was one of the top players in the country. Not only was he a dynamic athlete with his legs, but he developed into a poised passer in the pocket that could beat you with his right arm just as well as he could with his athleticism. Just ask Oklahoma. Travis threw for a career-high 418 yards in Florida State’s 35-32 win over the Sooners in the Cheez-It Bowl.

He also amassed 353 total yards — including two jaw-dropping runs down to the 1-yard line — to set up touchdowns in the 45-38 win over Florida in the regular-season finale.

It was these two performances, which capped off a six-game winning streak to end the year for FSU, that showed just how special Travis can be and why he is a preseason Heisman Trophy candidate.

And now that he’s set to start his last year of college football, and the Florida State coaching staff has added weapons like wide receiver Keon Coleman and tight end Jahiem Bell to go along with a staggeringly experienced offensive line and returning stars like Johnny Wilson and Trey Benson, there’s little wonder why the Seminoles are expected to boast one of the top offenses in the nation in 2023.

They have a whole lot of talent. And they have one of the best players in the sport at quarterback.
