New Florida State assistants discussion vision for turnaround in 2025

Florida State head coach has rebooted the Seminoles football program following a 2-10 season with a pair of renowned coordinator hires.

Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn brought with him from Orlando line coach Herb Hand and receivers coach Tim Harris Jr. to breathe new life into the moribund Florida State offense.

Hand, who was at Tulsa with both Malzahn and Norvell in the late 2000s, says familiarity will both will help breed success in Tallahassee.

“We’re cut from the same cloth,” said Hand. “We believe in the same things.”

Defensive coordinator Tony White who spent the last two seasons at Nebraska with Terrance Knighton guiding his defensive line will have the former NFL veteran leading the charge up front once again. Evan Cooper will coach the secondary alongside Patrick Surtain.

Knighton opened his remarks by complimenting the track record of Odell Haggins and calls Florida State “the pinnacle of college football” and the retention of Darrell Jackson as “the biggest portal signing.”

Cooper, who last coached in 2023 under White, is a South Florida native whose cousin Shevin Smith played for FSU from 1994-97. He emphasized the importance of recruiting in the state of Florida and the similarities between White and Norvell and their consistent approach.

Florida State’s season ended with a 31-11 loss to Florida on Nov. 29.

Florida State finished in last place in the ACC and below .500 for the fifth time in seven years and third time under Mike Norvell.

The 2-10 record is the worst Florida State season since a 1-10 campaign in 1974.

Florida State’s high school recruiting class for 2025 currently sits inside the On3 Top 20 team rankings. The 2025 early signing period for prep signees closed on December 6.

The transfer portal opened for business Monday, Dec. 9, 2024, and closes Saturday, Dec. 28, 2024. Check the Premium Recruiting Board for the latest updates on visitors, positional hot boards and more.
