Well, the winning streak was bound to end at some point.

But it’s hard to imagine a much uglier way than what happened on Tuesday night.

The No. 5 Florida State Seminoles, who had won 15 in a row coming into the in-state showdown, were knocked off by the No. 7 Florida Gators 7-2 in front of a sold-out crowd at Dick Howser Stadium. And perhaps adding injury to insult, FSU starting pitcher Evan Chrest was removed from the game after showing some discomfort in his right arm in the second inning. He threw just 18 pitches.

The Seminoles, who won all three games against the Gators a season ago, trailed for the final eight innings on Tuesday night. They fall to 15-1 on the season and will welcome in Boston College on Friday night for the start of ACC play.

Florida scored seven runs on eight hits and took advantage of six walks and four hit batters by the FSU bullpen.

Florida State head coach Link Jarrett used nine pitchers in the game. Maison Martinez recorded 10 outs and allowed two runs after being pushed up to the second inning after Chrest’s departure. Peyton Prescott allowed four hits and one run and recorded two outs, Joe Charles recorded five outs and allowed a two-run homer, Hudson Rowan recorded one out, walked two and allowed a run and John Abraham hit both batters he faced.

Payton Manca recorded a strikeout with the bases loaded and Chris Knier retired both batters he faced in the top of the eighth and then pitched a scoreless ninth, but the score was already 7-1 when he walked off the mound.

The story of the night was what the Florida pitching staff did to the Seminoles.

Florida State, which was averaging over nine runs per game, scored just two against the talented Gator arms. One came on an opposite-field solo shot by Drew Faurot in the fifth inning. The other on a solo home run by Myles Bailey in the ninth inning.

The rest of the night was controlled by the UF pitchers.

Florida State managed just six hits, walked twice, and struck out 10 times against a bevy of Florida relievers hitting the mid 90s with their fastballs. The Seminoles only had one inning all game with multiple base-runners and that was in the seventh when Cal Fisher walked and Jaxson West lined a two-out single to left. But Faurot struck out to end the threat.

First pitch for FSU’s conference opener Friday night is 6 p.m. ET. Ace lefty Jamie Arnold is in line to return the mound after missing last week’s start with an illness.
