Mableton (Ga.) Pebblebrook four-star running back Dwight Phillips opened eyes at Georgia during a camp workout during his junior year.

Phillips ran a 4.2 40-yard dash. The four-star Georgia signee’s track speeds have also garnered a ton of attention. Phillips has run a 10.2 100-meter dash in high school already.

Speed is in his blood. His father, Dwight Phillips Sr., is a former Olympic Gold Medalist in the long jump. The younger Phillips has inherited his father’s speed.

It helped him become a star at Pebblebrook. The four-star playmaker lined up at running back, wide receiver, wildcat quarterback and returned kicks while in high school. Phillips signed as the No. 174 overall prospect in the 2024 On3 Rankings.

He joins Georgia’s class as one of three running backs in the class. Georgia head coach Kirby Smart pointed to how well all three players complement one another.

“They complement each other,” Smart said to reporters on Wednesday. “They’re very different. You’ve got James Cook-Zamir White, Sony-Nick complementary package there.”

Smart spoke of Phillips separately. He pointed to the uniqueness of Phillips’ ability.

“Dwight’s completely different altogether,” Smart said. “He’s got a very unique skillset, very elite skillset.”

It is unclear how Georgia plans on employing Phillips once he’s on the field in Athens. There are some major chesspiece advantages that Smart and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo are already looking forward to exploring.

“How we use him will be very important,” Smart said. “He’s not just a normal back. He can do a lot of things. He can create a lot of matchup nightmares.”

Smart can see a lot of upside in the playmaker from the Atlanta area.

“We don’t think he’s even seen his full potential,” Smart said.

Dwight Phillips a part of a speedy trio

Georgia’s other two running back signees possess game-breaking speed as well. Four-star Nathaniel Frazier and Chauncey Bowens have speed that was notable to Georgia’s head coach.

There’s a combination of everything sprinkled in the class of 2024’s trio.

“We think they complement each other really well and give us big backs,” Smart said. “All three of those backs run sub-11 100-meters which sub-11 is rolling, and they’re big. We feel really good about those guys.”

Phillips and the other two running backs in the class of 2024 will have an opportunity to showcase their speed at the next level. Georgia signed six offensive linemen in the class of 2024. All of them weigh over 315 pounds.

Phillips was excited about the opportunity before his senior season even began.

“Oh we’re about to have a good time,” Phillips said with a laugh. “Those boys are big.”

Smart also raved about the offensive line class’s potential and size. Read about that here: https://www.on3.com/teams/georgia-bulldogs/news/kirby-smart-high-georgias-ol-class-but-theres-work-to-do/
