AD Mitchell not dressed for Georgia matchup with Florida
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Georgia wide receiver AD Mitchell is with the team in Jacksonville today but did not dress for the Bulldogs’ game against Florida. The sophomore pass catcher out of Missouri City, Texas has not played for the No. 1-ranked Bulldogs but in three games this year. He caught five passes for 73 yards and a touchdown in Georgia’s season-opening win over Oregon before having one catch on the first offensive play of the game the next week against Samford, turning his ankle and exiting the game shortly after. He briefly returned to action in Georgia’s win over Auburn without recording any stats.
Kirby Smart seemed doubtful that Mitchell would be able to play when asked for an injury update this week, stating that it was a high ankle sprain. That seems to add a level of difficulty in returning as the ankle can react to stimulation in different ways. Smart was hopeful to get him back before too long though.
“I think AD Mitchell is a dynamic receiver,” Smart said on Monday. “He’s hard to cover one-on-one. I mean, I get to see him, you know, every day at practice when he’s been healthy. And you know when you got a guy that can — that can go compete, do some things. He’s got toughness, he’s got quicks. But to say it’s been substantially different with him in or out, I don’t know what the analytics say. And, you know, it’s hard to figure that. Because so much of that is based on what personnel grouping we’re in, how the defense is playing us. You know, are they off, are they soft, are they cover two, are they split safety, are they middle field closed. There’s a lot of thinking that go into that. So I know that we’re a better football team with AD healthy, 100 percent. But we’re trying to get him back as fast as we can.”
Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett also sung the praise of Mitchell earlier this week. For his money, there aren’t many receivers out there better than Mitchell.

“He’s one of the best receivers in the country, if not the best,” sixth-year senior quarterback Stetson Bennett said on Monday. “I’ve got an immense amount of trust in him. What he does, what he brings to the table from a ball skills standpoint, twitch standpoint, strength, physicality, blocking, route running. We’ve missed him. I hope we get him back.”
Kickoff time for today’s game between No. 1 Georgia and Florida is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS. Brad Nessler, Gary Danielson and Jenny Dell will be on the call for the annual rivalry matchup, one that’s met over 100 times. Georgia holds a 54-44-2 all-time advantage with Kirby Smart having a 4-2 record during his time in Athens.
