Georgia WR AD Mitchell adds to practice work load per Kirby Smart
ATHENS, Ga. — It has been over two months since AD Mitchell has caught a pass for Georgia. The Bulldogs have been hoping week after week that a return was in the works. That hasn’t happened yet.
Kirby Smart, however, gave one of the most optimistic updates we’ve gotten on AD Mitchell in recent memory. The seventh-year head coach says that the sophomore wideout has put more on his plate this week in regards to practice. AD Mitchell is getting some full speed reps on the field.
“He’s closer right now than he’s ever been,” Smart said in what seemed to be a half-joking manner. Smart also noted that he doesn’t consider Mitchell to be at 100 percent.
When Smart spoke with reporters on Monday, he said that Mitchell hadn’t been doing “team” or 11-on-11 work in practice. Instead his focus had been on drill work and recovery.
According to Smart, AD Mitchell feels as if he tweaked the ankle against the Auburn, the only game he has played since week two. Intel gathered by DawgsHQ last week suggested that Mitchell was on the mend. Smart’s comments on Monday seem to confirm that in regards to the improvement but it doesn’t appear, for now, to be at a rate that would have him back on the field against the Yellow Jackets.

AD Mitchell was projected as Georgia’s No. 1 wideout coming into the season and he got off to a great start. He caught four passes for 65 yards and a touchdown in the season opener. But Georgia got the ball first the following week against Samford and threw to AD Mitchell in the flat on the first play from scrimmage. That’s when he suffered the ankle injury.
Georgia got major contributions from AD Mitchell a season ago. He caught 29 passes for 426 yards and four touchdowns with two of those scores coming in Georgia’s wins over Michigan and Alabama in the College Football Playoff. Bulldog fans won’t soon forget Mitchell’s go-ahead 40-yard touchdown against Alabama in the National Championship.
The Bulldogs have managed to field one of the nation’s most efficient and productive offenses in 2022 even without AD Mitchell. Stetson Bennett is the first UGA quarterback to surpass 3,000 yards in a season since 2013. Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey each have over 700 yards of total offense on the season and Kenny McIntosh is over 900 total yards.
Kickoff between Georgia and Georgia Tech is set for 12 p.m. ET on ESPN. The Bulldogs are favored by 35.5 points according to the VegasInsider Consensus.
