ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia was without AD Mitchell against Kentucky for what was essentially the 10th straight game. He has played in two games since the season opener but he suffered a high ankle sprain on one of those and saw just three snaps against Auburn a month or so ago.

In listening to Kirby Smart on Monday, it sounds like the guy projected as UGA’s No. 1 receiver is improving. It also sounds like AD Mitchell is more than one step from getting back on the field.

“AD was similar last week as he’s been to the previous weeks,” Smart said at Georgia vs. Georgia Tech media day. “I mean, he did run. He had a little few higher speeds. And he did some individual drills. But he didn’t do teamwork, like, 11-on-11 teamwork. And that’s the goal. You know, that’s the goal each week, to get him out there to do 11-on-11 and take some reps.”

Smart’s standard line of late when asked about AD Mitchell is to say he is hopeful that the sophomore wideout will be available that week. He told reporters recently that the three plays against Auburn might have done more harm than good.

According to Smart, AD Mitchell feels like he tweaked the ankle against the Tigers. Intel gathered by DawgsHQ last week suggested that Mitchell was on the mend. Smart’s comments on Monday seem to confirm that in regards to the improvement but it doesn’t appear, for now, to be at a rate that would have him back on the field against the Yellow Jackets.

AD Mitchell was projected as Georgia’s No. 1 wideout coming into the season and he got off to a great start. He caught four passes for 65 yards and a touchdown in the season opener. But Georgia got the ball first the following week against Samford and threw to AD Mitchell in the flat on the first play from scrimmage. That’s when he suffered the ankle injury.

Georgia got major contributions from AD Mitchell a season ago. He caught 29 passes for 426 yards and four touchdowns with two of those scores coming in Georgia’s wins over Michigan and Alabama in the College Football Playoff. Bulldog fans won’t soon forget Mitchell’s go-ahead 40-yard touchdown against Alabama in the National Championship.

The Bulldogs have managed to field one of the nation’s most efficient and productive offenses in 2022 even without AD Mitchell. Stetson Bennett is the first UGA quarterback to surpass 3,000 yards in a season since 2013. Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey each have over 700 yards of total offense on the season and Kenny McIntosh is over 900 total yards.

Kickoff between Georgia and Georgia Tech is set for 12 p.m. ET on ESPN. The Bulldogs are favored by 35.5 points according to the VegasInsider Consensus.
