ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia will once again be without sophomore wideout AD Mitchell when it takes on No. 1 Tennessee on Saturday. The Bulldogs have taken the field for pregame warmup and Mitchell is not dressed out with the team.

That makes two straight weeks of AD Mitchell not dressing out. He traveled with the team to Florida but didn’t dress for that one. Kirby Smart told reporters last week that Mitchell traveled with the team to get some extra treatment.

The Bulldogs’ bye week was two weeks ago. AD Mitchell had some time to rest but hasn’t been as available the past two weeks as he was the two weeks going into the bye.

Kirby Smart seemed doubtful that Mitchell would be able to play when asked for an injury update prior to the Florida game, stating that it was a high ankle sprain. That seems to add a level of difficulty in returning as the ankle can react to stimulation in different ways. Smart was hopeful to get him back before too long though.

“I think AD Mitchell is a dynamic receiver,” Smart said prior to the Florida game. “He’s hard to cover one-on-one. I mean, I get to see him, you know, every day at practice when he’s been healthy. And you know when you got a guy that can — that can go compete, do some things. He’s got toughness, he’s got quicks. But to say it’s been substantially different with him in or out, I don’t know what the analytics say. And, you know, it’s hard to figure that. Because so much of that is based on what personnel grouping we’re in, how the defense is playing us. You know, are they off, are they soft, are they cover two, are they split safety, are they middle field closed. There’s a lot of thinking that go into that. So I know that we’re a better football team with AD healthy, 100 percent. But we’re trying to get him back as fast as we can.”

Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett also sung the praise of Mitchell earlier this week. For his money, there aren’t many receivers out there better than Mitchell.

“He’s one of the best receivers in the country, if not the best,” sixth-year senior quarterback Stetson Bennett said on Monday. “I’ve got an immense amount of trust in him. What he does, what he brings to the table from a ball skills standpoint, twitch standpoint, strength, physicality, blocking, route running. We’ve missed him. I hope we get him back.”

AD Mitchell hasn’t been healthy since the first play of Georgia’s second game of the season. He suffered the high-ankle sprain on UGA’s first play from scrimmage against Samford in week two. AD Mitchell has appeared in just one Georgia game since, playing three snaps against Auburn.

Kickoff for Georgia vs. Tennessee is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS. It’s the highest-ranked matchup in the history of Sanford Stadium.
