Georgia has been without arguably the most talented member of its offensive line for the past four and a half games but that could soon change. In a meeting with the UGA beat after Tuesday’s practice, the Bulldogs’ first of the bye week, Kirby Smart gave the latest on junior right tackle Amarius Mims.

The mammoth tackle is “working his way back,” according to Smart. Mims is running and doing weight-bearing conditioning as well and Smart seemed to indicate that he has a chance to return against Florida on October 28.

Mims exited the South Carolina with an injury that has plagued Georgia a bit in 2023 — a high-ankle sprain. Mims underwent tight-rope surgery the following Monday, a procedure that Smart labeled successful when asked about it. He was spotted on the Bulldog sideline during the team’s blowout win over Kentucky on October 7 and at that point he was without a crutches, a walking boot, or even a brace.

It’s the same injury star tight end Brock Bowers is dealing with right now. Bowers sustained a high-ankle sprain against Vanderbilt a few days ago and underwent the same procedure the speed up the healing process on Monday.

Mims, a former five-star prospect has started five games at Georgia while playing in 21 contests in all. He saw action in seven games as a freshman and then 14 as a sophomore. His snaps last season were meaningful as he served in a three-man tackle rotation with Broderick Jones and Warren McClendon, both of whom were taken in the 2023 NFL Draft. Jones went in the first round while McClendon was picked in the fifth.

When McClendon went down with a knee injury in the 50-20 SEC Championship game win over LSU, Mims jumped as the Bulldogs’ starting right tackle in the College Football Playoff. The first start of his career came against Ohio State in the Peach Bowl. He made his second start over a week later in the National Championship vs. TCU.

Due to strong showings in those two games, on the biggest of stages, Mims was named first-team All-SEC at league media days in July. With him out, Xavier Truss slid over from left guard and started four games at right tackle. Now he, too, is banged up. Truss went down with an ankle injury of his own against the Commodores.

Truss, a fifth-year junior, was able to bear weight in the second half of the Vanderbilt game according to Smart. He did not, however, practice on Monday.
