Georgia sticks at No. 1 in AP poll ahead of bye week
We’ve seen seven AP polls thus far in 2023 and each of them have had Georgia at the top. That’s still the case in week eight as the Bulldogs head into their bye week. Georgia took down Vanderbilt on Saturday by a score of 37-20. It was the team’s seventh win of the season and 24th in a row dating back to the 2021 College Football Playoff.
UGA has 43 first-place votes followed by Michigan at No. 2 with 16. Ohio State is No. 3 with one first-place vote and Florida State sits at four with a pair of first-place votes. Washington is No. 5 after its big home win over Oregon and has two first place votes as well. The rest of the top 10 is Oklahoma at six followed by Penn State, Texas, Oregon, and North Carolina.
Three of Georgia’s next five opponents are also in the top 25. Missouri is at 20, Ole Miss is at 13, and Tennessee is ranked No. 17. Georgia plays those three teams, in that order, in consecutive weeks starting on November 4.
The Bulldogs’ win over Vanderbilt wasn’t pretty. They dug themselves into a 7-0 hold by busting a coverage on the opening possession of the game. The Commodores exploited it for a 49-yard touchdown to take the lead. Georgia then turned it over with a Carson Beck fumble on its first possession.
From that point on, UGA took control of the game. The defense got a three and out and a missed field goal. The offense responded with 27 straight points to take control of the game. Vanderbilt, however, did not go away. It put together a long touchdown drive to cut the lead to 14 early in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs answered back with three points to make it a 30-14 game.

After the Bulldog defense forced another three and out, the offense had a chance to put the game away but Beck was intercepted on the second play of the drive and it was returned down to the Georgia one-yard line. Vandy punched it in one play later to make it 30-20 but it missed the two point-conversion when Kamari Lassiter broke up the pass.
When Georgia got it back, it put the game away. Daijun Edwards carried the ball five times for 75 yards and that included a 62-yard jaunt on the second play. He capped off the drive with a one-yard touchdown an Peyton Woodring capped off the scoring with a PAT to make it 37-20.
Georgia’s next game will take place in 13 days. They take on Florida in Jacksonville on October 28. That game kick off at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
