Georgia offensive lineman Bo Hughley was arrested earlier this week on charges of reckless driving and failure to maintain lane. The arrest was made by the University of Georgia campus police and DawgsHQ has obtained a copy of the police report via open records request.

The arresting officer reports that he responded to a traffic incident located near the Carlton Street area of the River Road Loop on UGA’s campus on July 9 at 6:28 p.m. Upon arrival, he observed multiple cars and what he described as a “crowd of people” on the scene.

After stopping and inquiring about what had gone on, Hughley came forward as the driver of the vehicle and said that he had been traveling the posted speed limit of 25 miles per hour before losing control of his vehicle as he attempted to navigate a curve.

Hughley claimed that he had experienced trouble with his 2017 Chrysler 300 in the past, which was parked partially in the road way with clear damage to the front end. Hughley did not have his license on his person but provide his name and birthday to the officer for verification.

Hughley’s car had struck the curb near parking lot E06 and struck the curb next to the right lane before leaving the road and crossing the sidewalk. The vehicle also went into the grass and truck a speed limit sign before coming back to the roadway before stopping.

Upon inspection, the officer notes that the passenger side front tire was completely missing and it was later located in a nearby ditch. The driver’s side front tire was also missing and had been “sheered off the frame” of Hughley’s vehicle. There was also an impact mark near the passenger-side headlight consistent with striking the speed limit and front bumper had been dislodged with pinestraw stuck in the front end.

The officer interviewed the passenger of the vehicle, freshman defensive back Ellis Robinson, who reiterated that Hughley had been traveling the speed limit of 25 miles per hour. The physical evidence at the scene, however, led the officer to believe that Hughley was going faster. The tread marks were much longer than would be expected for a car traveling at that speed, nearly 200 feet long according to the report.

Another officer arrived to the scene and upon discussion, the two authorities determined that it was highly likely that Hughley had been driving above the posted speed limit. Camera footage of the area was inspected and showed that Hughley had accelerated past another car just before the incident.

The officer also notes that the area is often used by pedestrians and with the physical evidence, along with that of the camera footage, contradicting Hughley’s account, it was determined that there was enough probable cause to arrest Hughley on charges of reckless driving and failure to maintain lane. Hughley was placed under arrest and taken to the Athens-Clarke County jail where he was later released on $26 bond.

Hughley signed with Georgia in the 2023 class out of Langston Hughes High School (Fairburn, Ga.) He took a redshirt during his first season on campus and missed the entirety of spring practice after having surgery to repair a torn labrum.
