Branson Robinson unavailable for Georgia-Texas with MCL injury
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia head coach Kirby Smart was uncertain on the severity of Branson Robinson‘s injury Saturday night after UGA’s win over Mississippi State. He thought it was an MCL sprain but wanted to wait and see MRI results before saying anything definitive. Come mid-day Monday at his opening press conference of Texas week, the ninth-year head coach had more to say on the redshirt sophomore running back.
“Branson has an MCL. I don’t know how many weeks it’ll be. He won’t be available this week,” Smart said. “Forecasting it out is impossible. We’ve had MCL’s in the past that have been two weeks, three weeks. He’s going to be okay, but we’ve got to get him back okay.”
On the season, Robinson had rushed 22 times for 61 yards and two touchdowns entering Saturday’s win. He also had five receptions for 28 yards. Before exiting with the injury, Robinson carried it three times for 12 yards including the game’s first touchdown, adding a reception for five yards as well.
Robinson was the nation’s No. 2 running back in his high school recruiting class, signing with the Bulldogs in the Class of 2022 out of Germantown (Madison, Miss.) High School. He previously dealt with a knee injury, rupturing his patella tendon and missing the entirety of the 2023 season as a result. He was expected to be a contributor in the Bulldog backfield at the time of his injury and has returned to be exactly that this season. As a freshman, Robinson played in 12 games totaling 330 yards and three scores on 68 carries. He had a pair of touchdowns in the National Championship Game win over TCU.

Should Robinson be forced to miss any time, it’ll mean more from Nate Frazier and Cash Jones, as well as lead-back Trevor Etienne. Freshman Dwight Phillips is also an option and likely would make the travel roster to Texas. The Bulldogs are already without Roderick Robinson after he underwent surgery for turf toe during preseason and did not have Chauncey Bowens available on Saturday either. Bowens’ injury is undisclosed.
A full injury report for Georgia will be released on Wednesday night when the SEC shares its availability report. Last week, linebacker Smael Mondon and offensive lineman Tate Ratledge were listed as out while defensive lineman Jordan Hall and offensive lineman Jared Wilson were questionable throughout the week. Neither Hall nor Wilson was on the pre-game availability report indicating they were good to go, however, neither saw action in the win over Mississippi State. Smart indicated Wilson was available as a backup center. Other banged up Bulldogs included Marcus Harrison, Marques Easley and Kris Jones.
