Brock Bowers does it again, puts Georgia team on his back
AUBURN, Ala. — Brock Bowers has done it again. A week after he hauled in nine passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns against UAB, Bowers went for 157 yards and a touchdown on eight grabs in a 27-20 win over Auburn.
“Bowers did what he does. I mean, the guy’s amazing,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said after the game. “It’s a wonder why you just don’t go to him every play, you know? People know he’s there. Try to find ways — creative ways — to find him the ball.”
Bowers’ receiving yardage total topped a career high he set last season against Florida. It was his third game with over 150 yards and ninth with more than 100.
His touchdown also served as the deciding factor for the Bulldogs, who avoided a road upset in their first game away from Sanford Stadium this season.
“We ran that play earlier in the game. It was there,” Bowers said when asked about the 40-yard score with 2:52 to go in the game. “We ran it again, and I was excited we got the same look. I just kept running after I caught the ball. I was just running, I wasn’t really thinking.”
For quarterback Carson Beck, Bowers was exactly what he needed in his first career road start. Not only was pressure on him to perform in the tough road environment, but also because his team trailed at points during both the first and second halves.

“We came out and were firing the ball around. Brock Bowers was making plays. It’s part of the read, what they were trying to do against us. He was just getting open. Obviously it’s going to be him 1-on-1 at some point, and when he does get 1-on-1, we’re going to try and get the ball in his hands,” Beck said of Bowers. “Go watch the game today. That’s exactly why. It’s huge to have a guy that’s going to make big time plays in big time games. He’s a big time player … He’s crazy. He’s ridiculous. Keep throwing him the ball, keep feeing him the ball and he’s going to keep making plays.”
Bowers has done this before. Odds are he’ll do it again. Everybody around the Georgia program knows that getting the ball in his hands is never a bad plan.
“Who can argue that there’s a better football player anywhere in the country? Just football player,” Kirby Smart said when asked whether he thinks Bowers belongs in the conversation surrounding the Heisman Trophy after stating he doesn’t like to get into that kind of a debate. “The guy has the greatest toughness and grit that I’ve been around. He’ll do whatever you ask him to do for this team. I’ve got a lot of respect for that guy as a competitor.”
Bowers and the Bulldogs return back to Athens for their next game. Georgia hosts Kentucky, a Wildcats team that’s undefeated and coming off of a 33-14 win over Florida, next Saturday at 7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.
