Georgia tight end Brock Bowers had one of the best seasons in Bulldog history last year, breaking all sorts of record as a freshman in Athens. Those weren’t just freshman records though. Several were single-season records regardless of age – some regardless of position – as Bowers hauled in 56 passes for 882 yards and 13 touchdowns. He was named First-Team All-SEC by both the AP and coaches and earned both SEC and national Freshman of the Year status for his efforts.

Quite a tough act to follow up, huh? Well, Bowers is set on doing just that. Meeting with Georgia media on Tuesday for the first time since he stepped foot on campus last spring, Bowers shared on what last season was like and what his goals are for the 2022 season.

“Not really. I was just kind of out there doing my thing every day, just working hard. I didn’t really expect much during fall camp last year,” Bowers said when asked if he foresaw the success that he had last season. “It just all kind of happened pretty fast … I didn’t expect it. In the first game, in the locker room against Clemson, Hartley came up to me and he was like, ‘You’re taking the first play.’ I’m like, ‘Shoot, all right, I guess we’re ready to roll.’”

“There was always some sort of comfortability. But I think after the UAB game, I think I really started to settle in and stuff started to slow down a little bit,” he continued. “Shoot, it (picking things up in the offense) was kind of hard at the start. But I was able to pick it up pretty fast.”

Brock Bowers won’t be catching anybody off guard this year. He’s been named a preseason All-American by just about everybody who puts a list out. If he were draft eligible, he’d be among the first few names called. Only, he’s not. He’s got this season plus another at the college level. So, until that time comes, he’s taking the same approach to every single day that he had last season and the records that came with it.

“I wasn’t really focused on that in the moment. I was kind of worried about every single game, just winning every single game and trying to help the team as much as I could,” Bowers said. “I wasn’t really worried about all that stuff.”

“I mean, I’m just kind of taking every day for how it is and just going out there and just working as hard as I can and doing everything I can every day.”

As for where he wants to see his game grow, well, that’s a good question Bowers says.

“That’s a good question. I guess, just keep working on little stuff in the passing game and being more physical and striking people in the run game … I guess we’ll see. I’m just taking it day by day. I try not to focus too much on whole season things. I try to focus on the next thing.”
