Brock Vandagriff expected to remain at Georgia for 2023 season
Georgia will go into the 2023 season with three quarterbacks on scholarship. DawgsHQ has learned that redshirt sophomore signal caller Brock Vandagriff has decided to stay for at least one more season. Rusty Mansell of Dawgs247 was the first to report.
It was a decision that Vandagriff didn’t take lightly and it was one he, with the help of his support system, made since the G-Day spring scrimmage on Saturday.
“I’m not sure,” Vandagriff said after getting reps with the first team and second team offenses in the spring game. “I guess there’s some praying to do. But my plans, for now, are to just take it day by day.”
Vandagriff connected on 13 of 25 passes for 175 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in the G-Day game. Those two touchdowns came with the second-team offense. He also ripped off a 23-yard run.
Carson Beck had the strongest showing in the G-Day game, hitting on 15 of his 22 throws for 231 yards and a touchdown. That led many to go ahead and proclaim him as the starter for the 2023 season. Kirby Smart has stated that the competition is ongoing with Gunner Stockton also in the mix.
Vandagriff provided insight earlier this spring…
The third-year quarterback is as close to the Georgia playing field has he has ever been. After two years in the program with a little more than a handful of snaps under his belt, Vandagriff is one snap away provided he wins the backup job.
He’s also in position to get a similar or greater number of snaps compared to Beck in 2022. When Beck was Stetson Bennett’s backup last season, he was able to attempt 35 passes in mop up duty. Georgia’s favorable schedule might give Vandagriff an even greater opportunity.

But the Prince Avenue Christian (Bogart, Ga.) product told reporters earlier this spring that remaining at Georgia has more to do than playing time. He’s playing the long game.
“So with my mindset, what I put into that was that I’m learning stuff and getting better under Coach Monken and now Coach (Mike )Bobo,” Vandagriff said. “If I wasn’t getting reps and I wasn’t getting better then yeah, I would have left.
“But being able to know that my game is getting better mentally and physically, and I’m learning so much about the game of football and I’m going against one of the best defenses, one of the most fast-paced defenses in the SEC and the nation, I was becoming a better player for that. So that was some of the main reasons. I was being a better player for it.”
As a prospect Vandagriff was the nation’s No. 22 overall prospect and No. 4 quarterback per the On3 Industry Ranking. He was the No. 2 prospect in Georgia.
