Georgia linebacker Channing Tindall was announced SEC Defensive Player of the Week by the league office out of Birmingham, Ala. on Monday.

Tindall finished second on the team in tackles with eight stops, including six solo stops to tie a career-high. Among those, were three sacks, all three of which came in the second half. He also forced a fumble that was recovered by Travon Walker. Tindall was also named Walter Cap National Defensive Player of the Week, helping hold Tennessee to just 55 rushing yards on 36 carries.

“Our linebackers are really good players, even better leaders, and well-coached,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said about the linebackers after the game. “Those three guys have played a lot of football around here. We’re certainly going to miss them when they’re gone, but they are really good football players. They practice as hard as anybody on the team and Nakobe, Channing, and Quay (Walker) have no egos. It’s just another microcosm of the entire team when you watch that unit that they don’t get upset over who starts, they don’t get upset over who makes plays. They make a lot of calls and they lead our defense.”

“I think it was brought up, he’s got to take on a larger role with some of the guys we have injured and out. He’s taken on that role,” he added, specifically speaking about Tindall. “He’s always embraced that role on third down of being a guy on third down that can rush the passer. We were fortunate that he was able to do that tonight. He made a couple of really good flash plays with his speed. He’s extremely fast and that fumble was a big play.”

Tindall is the third Georgia player to win SEC Defensive Player of the Week, joining Christopher Smith and Nolan Smith. Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis and Devonte Wyatt have also been honored as SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week, while offensive honorees have included Stetson Bennett, Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey.

Georgia (10-0, 8-0 SEC) takes on Charleston Southern (4-5, 3-4 Big South) this Saturday at 12:00 p.m. ET in Athens. The Senior Day game at Sanford Stadium will be broadcast on SEC Network+, available to stream for those that get SEC Network in their television package.
