Chase Elliott weighs in on Georgia football vs. Atlanta Braves debate
Chase Elliott weighed in on a debate that no fan of Georgia football or the Atlanta Braves should have to consider. That doesn’t mean it’s not fun to debate it.
Some background info: the 2022 ESPYs has a category for ‘Best Team.’ It’s essentially every champion in the made-for-TV awards show’s annual cycle.
That means Georgia’s 2021 teams of destiny – the Dawgs and the Braves – will have to square off.
Before I asked 2020 NASCAR Cup Series Champion (and massive Dawgs / Braves fan) Chase Elliott for his take on the Marty Smith Podcast, I asked the question on social media recently.
It put fans of both teams in a sticky situation.
Which team was better?
No qualifiers. No caveats. Just answer with your heart. The answers varied for multiple reasons.

So, what does NASCAR Cup Series champion Chase Elliott think about the Georgia football / Atlanta Braves debate?
I divide the answers to this question into two categories:
Dominant team people, and team story people.
Georgia’s football team was more dominant than the Braves, in the vacuum context of the season. The Braves had the better team story. I’m not considering team droughts in that line of thinking.
Well, Chase Elliott is a team story guy. As a story guy myself, I appreciate that sentiment.
“I would probably say the Braves. And I think the reason for that, is just the way they closed out their season,” Elliott said.

“Not to say Georgia didn’t overcome injuries and things of that nature, but you had (Ronald) Acuña Jr. out, you lost like two or three of your starting pitchers going into the World Series. Lost one of them after game one. I just think there was a lot to overcome right there. Baseball is such a unique sport, and playoff baseball might be my favorite thing from a sports (standpoint). The intensity of the World Series, the NLCS, and watching all those series go down. Getting hot at the right time in that sport might be more crucial than any other sport there is. For them to be barely at .500 at the All-Star break and then to overcome the injuries they overcame and go on to win the whole thing, that was an impressive few months in my opinion.”
I happen to side with the Dawgs in this one, and Chase still loves the Dawgs. But let’s face it: for the fans of these teams and this driver, there are no losers here.

Ol’ #9 is damn proud to be a Georgia boy, and a Georgia champion. He just won on his home track at Atlanta Motor Speedway, and currently leads the Cup Series.
