There’s no doubt Georgia running backs coach Dell McGee is smiling ear-to-ear today, with the Bulldogs wasted no time pulling off a major flip on Saturday and landing former Florida Gators commit Chauncey Bowens for the Class of 2024.

Bowens, of North Palm Beach, Florida’s The Benjamin School, becomes Georgia’s eighteenth commitment of the cycle.

Ranked as the nation’s No. 214 overall prospect per the On3 Industry Ranking, Bowens is Georgia’s second running back commit in 2024, joining fellow four-star ball carrier Dwight Phillips.

While the Industry Ranking compiles data from across the four major recruiting services, Bowens is considerably higher in On3’s own metric, checking in as the No. 92 overall prospect and No. 10 running back in 2024 per the On300.

For Bowens, the staff in Athens, particularly McGee, was a key element in the decision.

“Coach Dell McGee is a really good dude that has a great relationship with all of his players,” he told On3’s Chad Simmons following a visit earlier this year. “When we talk, we talk about how hard they work there, how running backs get developed and things like that.”

The approach of the Bulldogs as struck a chord with the 5-foot-11, 215-pound bruiser.

“Everyone wants to be a national champion, so getting up there in January and seeing how hard they work, showed me a lot. I got a look at what makes Georgia national champions,” he told Simmons.

Bowens recently mentioned to GatorsOnline that he may take an official visit to Miami in late June and is scheduled to take an official visit to Florida next weekend, though it is unclear if those trips will still happen post-commitment.

On3 Scouting Report on Chauncey Bowens

“Physically-gifted runner with one of the better size-speed combinations among 2024 running back prospects. Measured at over 5-foot-11 and north of 215 pounds heading into his senior season. Has an ideal build with a powerful base and lower body. Has posted strong track times, highlighted by a personal best of 10.88 seconds in the 100 meters as a junior. Was a state finalist in the 100 meters as a sophomore with a 10.90 second mark. Shows considerable burst and easily pulls away in the open field. Explosive in his movements. Spins out of tackles and has the capability to run over defenders. Rushed for 940 yards and eight touchdowns on 130 rushes as a junior. Will need to increase his production to be on par with other blue-chip running back prospects and top draft picks at the position. Can also stand to improve his lateral agility as he looks more comfortable as a straight-line athlete at this time. Ran his fastest track times at the beginning of his junior season. Young for the cycle with a July birthday. Will not turn 18 until he’s enrolled as a freshman in college.” – Charles Power, On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings on Chauncey Bowens
