Georgia offered Calhoun WR Cole Speer over the weekend.

Georgia holds but a single wide receiver commitment in the Class of 2022, but the Bulldogs may well be in the thick of the hunt for another target now, as Calhoun wideout Cole Speer added an offer this weekend.

“It was definitely a moment I will remember for the rest of my life,” Speer said. “I’m just grateful for the opportunity.”

The relationship has been one that has taken off quickly, however.

“This is going to sound crazy, but back in June, Georgia had no idea who I was. A member of the staff got in touch with Coach [Todd] Monken and told him about me. Right after he watched my film, he wanted to get me there for a workout. A few days later, I made time to show up and work out,” Speer said. “After the workout, Coach [Cortez] Hankton, Coach Monken, and Coach [Kirby] Smart all said they liked what they saw. That led on to the visiting there yesterday, and well, you know how that went. My speed and acceleration are what I think stood out to them most, along with my athletic ability. I ran a 4.39 40-yard dash, posted a 38-inch vertical, and hit a top speed of 22 miles per hour.”

It didn’t take Smart and company long to decide that Speer was a fit for the Georgia receiver room, and he felt the love quickly.

“I met with Coach Smart a little bit after getting there yesterday, and he explained how he and the other coaches and staff like me so much as a player and as a person, along with my character and how hardworking I am,” he said. “If I had a dream school, I would say it is Georgia. I grew up watching them on TV with my family and friends every Saturday. Georgia has always been one of my favorite schools and football teams.”

Outside of Georgia, the likes of East Carolina and Memphis have come calling, but he’s in no rush to settle on a spot anytime soon.

“Most of these schools have been pushing me to come visit, but I haven’t had time with football workouts and practice,” Speer said. “Finding the best fit possible and where I feel most comfortable is where I will end up. I want coaches that will push me and make me grow as a player and a person. I am someone who goes by their gut feeling and their heart and doesn’t like for people to try and push me to make a decision. When I feel it’s the right time, that is when I’ll make my decision.”

Meanwhile, he’s watching the numbers.

“Usually, these places are wanting three to six wideouts, obviously depending on if they need them or not,” Speer said.

With his senior year ahead, the fast-rising wideout is focused moreso on his game than the next level.

“I would say I pride myself on my ability to be consistent. I’m not going to let one or two plays dictate how the rest of the game goes,” Speer said. “I hope to work on being a leader and really understanding what it means and what it takes to win on and off the field.”
