College Football Playoff: Projecting Georgia's CFP bracket ranking
The initial College Football Playoff rankings for the 2024 season will be released Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. A 12-team format is in place, replacing the four-team model, for the first time in the history of the sport. There will be playoff games on college campuses and the season will be longest ever in terms of both calendar days and games. Georgia, ranked No. 2 in both the coaches and AP polls, is right in the thick of it all.
The Bulldogs are 7-1 on the season with a couple of impressive wins over Clemson and Texas, a gut-wrenching road loss, and a few unimpressive wins on their resume. The schedule doesn’t get any easier as the Bulldogs have a pair of ranked teams, No. 16 Ole Miss and No. 7 Tennessee, left to end the SEC slate.
Where will Georgia land in the first CFP bracket?
On3’s Jesse Simonton has the Bulldogs ranked behind their AP and coaches poll ranking but just a little. He places Georgia at No. 3, behind No. 1 Oregon and No. 2 Ohio State. The last time Georgia debuted at No. 3 in the College Football Playoff was 2022.
Tennessee was ranked No. 1 in those initial rankings and it was also headed to Athens to take on the Bulldogs in the highest-ranked matchup in Sanford Stadium history. Georgia won that game 27-13 to 9-0 on the year. UGA would win the final six games of the season to finish 15-0 and win it’s second straight National Championship.

The old BCS formula has Georgia at No. 2 and it’s due in large part to it’s strength of schedule thus far. The lofty ranking, no matter where you look, suggests that the Bulldogs have some breathing room down the stretch. With two games against playoff contenders Ole Miss (November 9 in Oxford) and Tennessee (November 16 in Athens), it might be necessary.
Questions abound for The College Football Playoff committee around how it will view certain teams. That’s especially true for teams in the SEC and Big10 with more than one loss. Georgia’s only loss is to No. 11 Alabama on the road but if it drops another one, especially to Ole Miss, it will have losses to a pair of two-loss CFP contenders. It could be fascinating to watch it all unfold.
