Georgia debuts at No. 3 in initial College Football Playoff Rankings
The initial 2022 College Football Playoff Rankings are out and they disagree with the AP and coaches’ polls. Unlike last season, Georgia is not No. 1. Tennessee is in the top spot followed by Ohio State at No. 2 and Georgia is at No. 3. It denies Sanford Stadium the first ever No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup but it still leaves intact the first ever top-three matchup.
Clemson sits in the No. 4 spot. Michigan comes in at No. 5, Alabama at No. 6, and TCU at No. 7. Oregon, the team Georgia took down in week one, is at No. 8. USC sits at No. 9 and LSU at No. 10.
Tennessee’s resume is undeniable. The Volunteers have wins over two top-10 CFP ranked teams, LSU and Alabama. Georgia has the one vs. Oregon.
Georgia was the nation’s No. 1 team in the 2021 College Football Playoff Rankings from their debut up until the final rankings prior to the start of the playoff. The Bulldogs lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship, falling to a No. 3 seed in the College Football Playoff.

Kirby Smart’s team took on No. 2 Michigan in The Orange Bowl and dominated, grabbing a 34-11 win. That set the stage for a rematch with Alabama for the National Championship. Georgia exploded for 20 points in the four quarter to take down the Crimson Tide by a score of 33-18. It was the Bulldogs first National Championship since 1981. Current UGA starting quarterback Stetson Bennett IV took home offensive MVP honors in both the Orange Bowl and the National Championship.
The 2022 season kicked off with Georgia being ranked No. 3 in both the coaches and AP polls. It moved up to No. 2 after thumping Oregon 49-3 in the season opener. A rise to No. 1 came in week four where Georgia hung for a couple of weeks, fell out for a couple of weeks, and then returned.
Starting with the Volunteers on Saturday, Georgia has a four-game stretch to end the regular season. That includes three SEC games, two road games, and two home games. Following the showdown with Tennessee is a trip to Mississippi State. That game is set for a 7 p.m. ET kickoff (ESPN). The Bulldogs then travel to Lexington for a matchup with Kentucky before returning home to play Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets haven’t been to Athens since 2018 due to the conference-only schedules played by SEC teams in 2020.
