Georgia falls to No. 6 in playoff rankings after SEC Championship loss
Georgia will not make the 2023 College Playoff. After losing to 27-24 to Alabama on Saturday, the Bulldogs are ranked No. 6 in the rankings that determine the four-team field. It’s the first time since 2020 that UGA has not made it.
Michigan moved into the No. 1 spot with the Georgia loss and Washington is No. 2. Texas jumped four spots to No. 3 and Alabama also jumped four spots to No. 4. Florida State, the 13-0 ACC Champion, has been left out of the playoff. It comes in at No. 5.
The writing was on the wall for the Bulldogs when it fell to the Crimson Tide inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium. That loss placed Georgia on the outside, looking in although Kirby Smart believes his team is absolutely one of the best four.
“Bill Hancock said it’s not the most deserving,’ Smart said. He said, simply, it’s the best four teams. So, if you’re going to tell me somebody sitting in that committee room and doesn’t think that Georgia team is one of the best four teams, I don’t know if they’re in the right profession because it’s a really good football team. It’s a really talented football team. It’s a really balanced football team. So, they have to make that decision, but it’s the best four teams, and that’s critical.”

The 2023 season saw Georgia go 12-0 for the third straight year, but for the second time in those three seasons, the Bulldogs lost to Alabama in the SEC Championship game. The first time that happened was in 2021 and the Bulldogs still got into the College Football Playoff as the No. 3 seed. They thumped Michigan in the Orange Bowl and then topped Alabama in Indanapolis to snap a 41-year National Championship drought.
Georgia has won 41 of 43 games over the past three seasons. It set an SEC record in 2023 by earning its 29th straight win.
