David Pollack: Beck may be better than Bennett, still has to prove it

The Pollack Family foundation hosted its annual golf fundraiser this week, which gave DawgsHQ the chance to speak with David Pollack, of course. It’s always a great event, and for a tremendous cause in the Athens community.

The first order of business with David Pollack in our conversation was all about Carson Beck.

Pollack casually mentioned during ESPN’s NFL Draft coverage that he believes the Georgia quarterback will be a Heisman finalist.

Hope you took your rat-poison blockers today, Carson.

Even in May, Pollack feels confident in that take.

“I just think he’s got a great makeup. First of all, he can sling the crap out of it. Ridiculous accuracy. Really smart. I would say right now he’s better than Stetson (Bennett), but the thing will be the games,” Pollack said.

“Big moments. That’s stuff you can’t predict. I think with the Heisman and stuff, Stetson was the best big-game quarterback we’ve seen in a long time. But Carson, from the tools standpoints, tangibles, surrounded by people, he’ll be just fine.”

Beyond the quarterback discussion, I wanted to get David Pollack’s thoughts on this Georgia team as a whole

Quick-draw stuff.

Describe this bunch of Bulldogs in three words or less.

Or fewer, for the English police out there.

“I love my broken English, Pollack said.

“They’re ‘Just some Dawgs.’ They really are. And I mean that, watch them and they’ve just got a different attitude. A different demeanor. Are some people different? Sure. They’re coached great. They’re talented.”

Even with all of that in Georgia’s favor, Pollack believes this three-peat effort brings Kirby Smart his biggest challenge yet.

And it’s all about whether or not Georgia can avoid the entitlement that comes with multiple titles.

“This is going to be the hardest one, though. You could argue the second one last year Kirby looked around and was like, for the repeat, Jordan Davis isn’t here. Devonte Wyatt. Fifteen Draft picks aren’t here. Now he’s like, ‘Yeah, you were here, crap, you were here, crap you were here. It’s going to be a lot harder. It’s going to be a harder deal for sure. So it will be interesting to see how they handle that. They’ll be in the mix. As a Georgia fan, it’s freakin’ fun.”

There’s a sense from Pollack that he truly appreciates this Georgia era. He implores Dawgs fans to do the same

This is high-cotton time in Athens.

David Pollack is pinching himself.

“I’m standing next to this (two National Championship trophies) and I’m like, ‘What the heck is this?’ We got one, and I was like, ‘Dude, that’s amazing. I’m good for a lifetime. And then last year coming in, everybody was like, ‘How are we going to be?’ and I’m like ‘I don’t care.'”

Yes, there are two championships and 25 NFL Draft picks in two seasons.

All the more reason for Georgia fans to remember where they came from and appreciate the here and now.

“Another special class (is coming in next year’s NFL Draft). But again, I think it speaks to what Kirby’s built and what he’s done. It’s not normal,” Pollack said.

“And Georgia fans, don’t be turds. Enjoy this. Soak it up. It’s awesome. If you don’t win this year, it’s still not a failure. It’s a heck of a run. Back-to-back in the Playoff era hasn’t been done. So, to ask for a third I feel like it’s gluttonous. I feel like it’s not OK. But we’ll be in the mix.”
