Dawgs in the Pros: Sony Michel signs with Miami Dolphins
Former Georgia star running back Sony Michel was announced as planning to sign with the Miami Dolphins by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Monday evening. Michel spent this past season with the Los Angeles Rams after starting his career with the New Englad Patriots, having won two Super Bowls in the process. He’ll join the Dolphins on a one-year deal.
Michel was part of a two-man tandem for Georgia during much of his career including the 2017 SEC Championship season. He’s best remembered for his game-winning score in the College Football Playoffs against Oklahoma to win the Rose Bowl in double overtime. On the day, Michel ran for 181 yards and three scores including the 27-yard walk-off winner. The Offensive MVP performance put him over the 1,000-yard mark for the season, totaling 1,227 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground, and gave the Bulldogs two 1,000-yard rushers on the season with Nick Chubb also topping the mark. Chubb and Michel’s 326 combined rushing yards in the Rose Bowl put them at 8,259 career rushing yards, surpassing the FBS record held by SMU’s Eric Dickerson and Craig James.
Michel’s senior season wasn’t his only productive one though. In fact, it was one of two seasons that he topped the 1,000-yard mark, also doing so in 2015 with 1,136 yards and eight scores. Michel added three receiving touchdowns during that sophomore season.
After his collegiate career was over, Michel was picked in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft with the No. 31 overall pick by the New England Patriots. He rushed for 931 yards and six touchdowns during the regular season before really breaking out in the playoffs. In the Divisional Round against the Chargers, Michel carried 24 times for 129 yards and three touchdowns. He added 113 yards and two scores on 29 careers in the AFC Championship before scoring the only touchdown of Super Bowl LIII, adding to the NFL rookie record for rushing touchdowns in the playoffs that he already held. Only Hall of Famer Terrell Davis, another Georgia great, has rushed for more touchdowns in a single postseason, doing so in four games as opposed to Michel’s three.

Michel added 912 yards on a career-high 247 carries during the 2019 regular season, scoring a career-high seven touchdowns. His 2020 season wasn’t quite as strong though, only playing in nine games due to injury. After the 2020 season, Michel was traded to the Rams in exchange for a fifth and sixth round pick, leading the Rams in rushing during the regular season with 845 yards. He’s the latest offensive addition this offseason for the Dolphins who have already picked up speedy wide receiver Tyreek Hill and a pair of running backs (Chase Edmonds and Raheem Mostert) among other weapons.
