Despite injury, Brock Bowers still providing spark for Georgia
Having Brock Bowers on the sideline due to injury isn’t ideal for the Georgia Bulldogs, but having the presence of the 2022 Mackey Award winner on the sideline cheering on his team?
That’s certainly something the Dawgs have cherished.
“He’s great. He’s the spirit of this team,” Kirby Smart said of Bowers last Saturday following the Bulldogs’ win over the Florida Gators in Jacksonville.
The head coach was also quick with a joke as to why he brought along the All-American tight end, even though he knows that when it comes to Bowers, it’s all business.
“I just wanted to make sure he rehabs, put my own eye on him,” Smart quipped. “No, This guy has been in every meeting. He was in the punt walkthrough today. He goes to everything. He’s front and center, on time, ready to go and still he gets all of his rehab done.”
Bowers’ replacement and fellow tight end, Oscar Delp, has notice much of the same from the leader of his positional group — consistency, effort, and devotion, even in the face of injury
“Yeah, he’s been great. He’s been at every meeting. He’s with us every time we’re watching film,” Delp said. “He’s the same Brock he’s been when he’s healthy. I’m excited to kind of have him there always with us and talking with us. He’s always going to be an extra brain over there.”

For the sophomore understudy, it’s been a chance to learn from the standout junior in a yet another way.
“He’s just so smart with the game of football and everything, just what he sees. He’s a great teammate, so it’s been great having him with us still,” Delp said. “Outside of the playing field, it’s almost like nothing ever happened. He’s still in every meeting, doing everything that he’s always doing.”
Smart isn’t surprised by the involvement, though. It’s just Brock being Brock.
“Everybody looks at him. We’ve had other guys get that injury, and they disappear for weeks. They come back. He hasn’t missed anything. He loves football, and he loves this team,” Smart said. “That’s just the kind of kid he is.”
Prior to a high ankle injury against the Vanderbilt Commodores, Brock Bowers had posted 41 receptions for 567 yards and four touchdowns on the 2023 season. The third-year tight end was recently named a semifinalist for the Lombardi Award.
A timetable for his return from tightrope surgery remains unclear.
