Former Georgia wide receiver Rara Thomas is taking the necessary steps to continue his football career. After being dismissed from the UGA football program late this summer, Thomas has entered the transfer portal with one year of eligibility remaining. He will likely need the legal process to run its course before he’s able to play football again.

It was a second arrest in an 18-month span that caused Thomas to get dismissed over the summer. He was charged with a felony count of cruelty to a child and two counts of domestic battery. He left the team on August 1 and was indicted by a Superior Court grand jury over a month ago. Thomas was arraigned on those charges on Monday and entered a not guilty plea for each count.

He was accused of causing harm to the mother of his child and the child itself while the mother was holding it. It was Thomas second arrest after being in an altercation with the same alleged victim just a couple of months after he arriving in Athens as a transfer from Mississippi State. Thomas entered a pre-trial diversion program with the agreement that his record would be expunged so long as he met certain stipulations of the program.

Thomas played one season at Georgia, catching 23 passes for 383 yards and a touchdown. He missed three full games and part of another with a foot injury suffered in November. He would later suffer a broken bone in that foot that caused him to miss the SEC Championship game and the Orange Bowl.

A native of Eufaula, Ala., Thomas spent his first two seasons at Mississippi State, leading the Bulldogs in receiving for the 2022 season.
