E.J. Lightsey commits to Georgia, restores Fitzgerald HS connection
E.J. Lightsey will play football for the Georgia Bulldogs. He chose the Dawgs over his former commitment, Florida, as well as Georgia Tech and South Carolina.
That sentence up above is anything but a plug-and-play National Signing Day statement.
Lightsey will be the first Fitzgerald Purple Hurricane to join the Bulldogs’ football program since letterman offensive lineman Victor Perry played for Vince Dooley from 1984-1987.
If you aren’t familiar with the high school football landscape in Georgia, that’s a long drought for one of the state’s storied programs.
Lightsey brings the Purple Hurricane – Georgia Bulldog connection into a new era. Ranked the No. 48 LB overall and No. 44 in the state according to On3 Sports Consensus, he now gives Fitzgerald a reason to cheer for one of its own on Georgia football Saturdays.
Georgia fans will have plenty of reasons to cheer for him, too, even if they aren’t from Fitzgerald. Lightsey has a great chance to become yet another ‘under-valued’ recruit that shines Between the Hedges. Scouting reports we’ve heard indicate that defensive experts drool over his toughness and sideline-to-sideline abilities.
Lightsey commits after crediting lead recruiter Glenn Schumann with a first-class recruiting experience in his last visit to Georgia.

“Coach Schumann never gave up on me. He stayed in touch and we have a good connection. I spent a lot of time with him on the visit and we watched film, talked about me at inside linebacker, and he made me feel like a priority.”
Lightsey was definitely a Dawgs priority in this class. Kirby Smart took his ‘Kirby-copter’ to see him following that official visit to Athens.
The fact that the Dawgs closed this one out on a former Florida commit automatically makes E.J. Lightsey a fan favorite. Lightsey’s commitment to his home state Dawgs was equally special.
“I can represent my state, my city, and play for a great team. It doesn’t get much better than that.
