The AP and college football coaches weren’t shy about giving the Georgia program dues on Tuesday.
One of the top voices in the sport has spoken out as well, and he’s joining the chorus.
ABC commentator and ESPN College Gameday panelist Kirk Herbstreit named Dawgs’ defensive coordinator Dan Lanning as his top-performing coach of Week 1.
Lanning, who’s been with the program since 2018, was certainly key in Georgia’s dynamic defensive effort against Clemson on Saturday night, with his unit posting seven sacks, holding the Tigers to three points, and giving up just two total rushing yards offensively.
Herbstreit warm on the Dawgs?
It’s not the first time Herbstreit has given love to Georgia coaches in the early goings of the 2021 campaign, however.
“I’m a Kirby guy. I think he’s doing great,” Herbstreit said last week ahead of Georgia’s matchup with Clemson. “I think he recruits great, I think he develops talent. You know how it is to win a championship, you’ve just got to catch a break here or there. You’ve got to stay healthy. All that boring stuff, but it’s all true.”

He hasn’t been shy with his affection for the Dawgs, either, praising them ahead of last week’s game.
“They’ve got a team that’s ready to go and it’s a tough way to start with Clemson,” Herbstreit said last week. “But if they win that game, and you start to look down that schedule, there’s going to be Georgia fans that are hooting and hollering thinking this is the year again. Because they have a team that could be built to win a championship. But I don’t sense any pressure [on Kirby Smart]. I think they’ve been close and just have to get over the hump.”
He followed that up with a reply to author Annie Downs on Twitter after the game.
“Congrats on a great win,” Herbstreit posted. “Your Dawgs look really good.”
In addition to the Lanning accolades, he named the Bulldogs third overall on his top-performing teams:
And tweeted his support of Dawgs linebacker Nakobe Dean:
