File The Name: Keyon Standifer blooming in Georgia's backyard
Athens (Ga.) Athens Academy Keyon Standifer is blossoming into a star right in Georgia’s backyard. Standifer has quickly taken on a major role as a freshman at Athens Academy.
The campus sits just under six miles from Sanford Stadium. Georgia hasn’t offered, and neither has anyone else yet.
Coaches in the area have given high praise for the two-way playmaker.
“I didn’t expect to be one of the leaders in stats on the team as a freshman without starting,” Standifer said.
He’s already got his eyes on the hometown program. Standifer admits he looked at Ohio State a lot growing up but Georgia is also a dream school of his.
“It would feel great to get an offer from Georgia,” Standifer said. “I’ve heard coach Smart was watching us. That feels great.”
Keyon Standifer being put on a big stage early on
Standifer is in a bit of a unique situation playing at the local private school. Georgia running back coach Dell McGee‘s son Austin McGee is a senior athlete playing with the Spartans.
Georgia wide receiver coach Bryan McClendon‘s son Bryan McClendon Jr. also plays alongside Strandifer at Athens Academy.

Standifer feels the opportunity in that situation.
“It’s hard but at the same time, you’ve got to push yourself because you know scouts are watching,” Standifer said. “They could be watching at any time and you never know when they are.”
Standifer hasn’t really begun thinking about the next level yet. He’s still very much focused on today and trying to Athens Academy win games.
“I haven’t really been thinking about college too much,” Standifer said. “I’m trying to win the region championship and hopefully get to state.”
Standifer feels he had a bit of a leg up on his development early in his high school career. He’s played highly competitive youth football coming up. He played for the East Metro Steelers in the Atlanta Metro area. He saw a lot of future high school and college stars along the way.
“It was a tough league to play in,” Standifer said. “I’ve been playing in tough leagues since I was 6-years-old.”
