Count former Georgia hardwood standout J.J. Frazier among those supporting the return of Xavier assistant coach and former Georgia player/assistant Jonas Hayes to the Bulldogs’ basketball program.

In a series of tweets on Wednesday afternoon, Frazier laid out his thoughts on why Hayes deserves the opportunity to take over the anticipated opening as the head coach for the Bulldogs.

The following are quotes from Frazier’s Twitter, unedited:

“I get on here and keep seeing why Jonas Hayes shouldn’t be the head coach. The problem I have is, not the opinion, but the fact that people think someone can’t succeed because they don’t have “head coach” experience. He’s a leader of men, a great dude and helluva recruiter.

So if you think he ain’t built for this type of a job, or you just don’t want him for your own personal reasons than (sic) so be it but I can’t sit here and allow y’all to bash a #DGD .. whether Brooks choose him or not Jonas Hayes will be a success as a Head Coach #StayLow

I normally don’t tweet like that but some of y’all have me big annoyed.”

Frazier continued in responding to those with questions:

“Well he knows the the game well. Hes no dummy. He has the charisma+ knowledge but we also have to acknowledge that he’s never coach in a power 5. However if he puts one or two coaches who has around him with his knowledge, passion and love for UGA. It’s low risk, high reward,” Frazier said to a question regarding who the Bulldogs should put around Hayes.

Next, Frazier responded to someone pointing out that Kirby Smart had no head coaching experience when hired, whereas Tom Crean did.

“Coach Crean, will all respect is final 4 coach and a proven winner. It’s different at UGA. You have to move a certain way and have to understand what’s what. You’ll never be ahead of football but you can complement them. Only a certain few knows that. Jonas is one,” he said.

Another Twitter follower suggested Georgia would do well to get someone with love for the program.

“Why not right.. cause i can promise you this.. he wouldn’t leave it worse than he got it,” Frazier said.

Georgia basketball anticipating opening

It’s no surprise to see Tom Crean on the chopping block given the floundering the Dawgs have done under his tenure.

According to a report from Chip Towers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, four candidates are expected to be potential frontrunners for the anticipated vacancy — Xavier associate head coach Jonas Hayes, Cleveland State head coach Dennis Gates, Wake Forest head coach Steve Forbes and USC head coach Andy Enfield.

Both Forbes and Enfield have now signed long-term contracts with their respective programs, which may eliminate them from consideration for the job.
