Georgia is down a commitment with four-star cornerback Daniel Harris, who’d been pledged since July 1, opting to open up his process once again.

Of the news, he told On3:

First I would like to thank the University Of Georgia, Coach Smart, and Coach Fran Brown for building a great relationship with me and my family.

I also would like to thank all of the Georgia Bulldog fans who have supported me during my recruitment process.

However after countless hours of discussing the best possible opportunities for me at the next level I have decided to decommit from The University of Georgia and open up my recruitment.

The news brings the Bulldogs down to four commitments in the defensive backfield, with projected corners AJ Harris, Justyn Rhett, Chris Peal and safety Joenel Aguero still aboard for the Dawgs.

What does the news mean for the Bulldogs?

Let’s examine that and where they go from here.

WHAT IT MEANS

No way to spin this one — Harris’ decommitment is a loss for the Bulldogs, as he was the top ranked corner in the class per the On300 rankings (AJ Harris, meanwhile, ranks higher per the On3 Consensus).

Harris is a lengthy, rangy prospect with speed to spare and was a major focus of first-year cornerbacks coach Fran Brown since his arrival to Athens.

He’d also been adamant that Athens was where he’d wanted to be.

“I’m locked in right now,” Harris told On3’s Chad Simmons in late October. “I’m locked in. Me staying close with the program, me staying close with the coaching staff, me talking to the guys on the team,” he added. “This way, we just connect. (I have) a good relationship and a bond with all of them.”

So, he was saying all the right things until just recently.

Right now, I’d look for Penn State or one of the Florida schools to be in the mix, though it’s more than fair to assume that the Dawgs will keep the pressure on until the Early Signing Period.

WHAT’S NEXT

This is where it gets interesting.

It’s not as if Georgia has just been courting many names publicly at the defensive back spot, with few mentions along the way.

As far as a couple to watch, I’d say North Oconee cornerback Khalil Barnes could potentially be one, though I haven’t heard his name mentioned heavily in Georgia circles.

Still, he’s close to home over in Bogart, has visited Georgia several times, and the Bulldogs showed a bit of intrigue in him. His stock has also risen significantly over this season, with Notre Dame, Clemson, and Oklahoma all taking a vested interest. He’d represent a name worth checking in on.

Additionally, we’ve heard whispers behind the scenes that the Dawgs have checked in on other names, though specifics to that end have been light.

Regardless, look for Georgia to get back to the drawing board and seek to reel in another playmaker in the defensive backfield.
