Four-star Georgia commit Lawson Luckie is a 'complete tight end'
Norcross (Ga.) four-star tight end Lawson Luckie has Georgia’s coaching staff giddy about what could be. That’s saying a lot considering the Bulldogs’ current tight-end situation.
The position is one of power for the current Bulldogs. Brock Bowers, Darnell Washington, Oscar Delp and Arik Gilbert are all former high school All-Americans.
Luckie is the No. 187 overall prospect in the On3 Consensus rankings for the class of 2023. He a part of a tight-end tandem already pledged to the Bulldogs alongside fellow four-star Pearce Spurlin.
Luckie heads toward the end of his senior with a bit of an old-school experience compared to his future teammates. Luckie isn’t coming from a super pass-happy offense. He also hasn’t been a staple on the 7-on-7 circuit the way Gilbert and Delp were.
He has 101 career receptions for 1,161 yards and 10 touchdowns. Luckie is on his way to career bests in his senior season. He already had four touchdown catches in 2022.
That has forced him to impact the game in other ways. Luckie prides his work as a blocker. Watching him on Thursday night, Luckie took a few defenders deep into the secondary.
He plays along the line of scrimmage. Luckie is physical. He’s filled in physically and is a strong athlete. Norcross does take advantage of his physical traits as a pass catcher. On Thursday they lined Luckie up in the slot and threw him fades a few times.
He also lined up as a lone-side wideout and caught a touchdown. Luckie may not be the route runner Delp was this time last year. He may have the straight-line speed of Bowers or the sheer size of Washington. Luckie has got plenty of giddy-up and nuance to his game to create space.

Lawson Luckie the playmaker
Luckie’s touchdown score on Thursday night showcased a few things. He got a strong release on a cornerback and got on top.
The opposing defender was able to stay close with his speed, but Luckie adjusted to the ball in the air and did just enough legally, to create a little separation down low.
While there was some bumping and the ball was thrown over his shoulder Luckie was to track the ball and snag it.
He showed soft hands a few times on Thursday.
Luckie can do it all as a tight end. That gives Georgia options for him once he gets to campus. He can easily morph in and out of the roles Georiga has in store for all of their tight ends.
With potential high draft grades possible for many of the current group, Luckie has early impact potential in the next two falls in Athens.
