Quarterbacks are looked at as leaders in a recruiting class, and Georgia has the paperwork of its longest committed signal caller in. Findlay (Ohio) Ryan Montgomery has been announced as officially signed with the Bulldogs for the Class of 2025.

A four-star prospect ranked No. 139 overall according to the On3 Industry Ranking, Montgomery is the nation’s 13th best quarterback prospect. He committed to Georgia in April and has remained that way – even with UGA looking into and eventually taking a second commitment at his position and a late push by Florida. The Bulldogs were the choice over the Gators, as well as South Carolina Gamecocks, at the time of commitment, and Billy Napier and company tried to make a last minute effort to flip Montgomery. It was to no avail.

For Montgomery, Athens feels like home. He received an offer from the Bulldogs when the offense was still under the direction of offensive coordinator Todd Monken. Even through a change in leadership to Mike Bobo, Montgomery remained all-in on Georgia.

“Coach Bobo is awesome,” Montgomery told On3 at the time of his commitment. “He played the position, so that is definitely big. It’s an extra layer of knowledge that he has and also, he’s been at Georgia for a while. He’s been in contact with me since he got there. He’s been awesome for me and my family. Coach Bobo’s definitely someone that I knew I would love to be around for three, four or five years. I can definitely see myself being around him and I know my parents feel the same way. I know I would feel super comfortable being around him and being coached by him.”

“It starts with practice and how everybody in that building carries themselves,” he added. “It starts with Coach Smart. He’s on the microphone all practice and coaching kids hard but ultimately, he is trying to make them better. I like how intense practice is and that’s going to translate to the games. I think they’ve built a program where they have a lot of like-minded kids and coaches. They’re going to win at a high level for quite a long time.”

Montgomery made several return trips to Athens after his commitment. He did his best to help add talent around him, all while getting a jump start on learning Georgia’s offense. Montgomery tore his ACL in the opener of his senior season, so getting back on the field certainly has been on his mind. He is set to enroll in January to continue his journey started towards doing so at the collegiate level.

“I’m not going to have it mastered, its a huge playbook, but I’m doing the best I can to get as much as I can down. That’s what I’ve been focused on, that’s what the next few months are going to be,” Montgomery told DawgsHQ. “Everything that you can learn is one less thing you have to think about when you’re on the field playing and taking those practice reps. It’s a lot of information. There’s like 34 pages of just formations. That’s not even the concepts. That’s just the formations. It’s a lot. It’s going to be a huge advantage having these few months to get a little more comfortable with the playbook.”

“It’s going to be close,” he added about hopefully returning to the field for spring practice in March, about six months after surgery. “I’m going to do everything in my power to get back for spring ball. I think I attack things a little bit differently than most people do, so I think I’ll get back a little quicker than the regular person would just because of how initially I do things. When I focus on something, that’s really what I focus on. The plan is to hopefully be back for spring ball, if not, I know I’ll be able to do pretty much everything except for the contact stuff, which I’m not getting hit in practice anyway. I think I should be able to do almost every thing. Time will tell.”

Montgomery is joined by Hezekiah Millender at his position in the Class of 2025. Currently, Georgia has four quarterback on scholarship – all of whom could return next season should they choose to do so: Carson Beck, Gunner Stockton, Jaden Rashada and Ryan Puglisi.
