Georgia assistant QB's coach Montgomery Van Gorder reportedly taking NFL position

Georgia appears to have a opening at one of its key support-staff positions. According to a report from Matt Zenitz of CBSSports, third-year assistant quarterbacks coach Montgomery Van Gorder is leaving the UGA program for the NFL. He’s expected to take a similar position with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Van Gorder has been with the program since 2019 in some capacity. His father, Brian Van Gorder, was Georgia’s defensive from 2001 through 2004, the first four years of Mark Richt’s tenure. He played quarterback at Notre Dame and Youngstown State.
The past two seasons have seen him take on a bigger role where he has worked closely with the Bulldog quarterbacks. He stepped into that role when Mike Bobo became offensive coordinator after the 2022 season. With the NCAA passing a rule in 2024 that support-staffers can coach in full capacity during practice, Van Gorder’s role grew.
Van Gorder is in the same role that Buster Faulker occupied under Todd Monken. Kirby Smart has said in the past that the analyst positions are in place to support the coaches. They meet with the quarterbacks and help them get them ready for future practices or games.

Good or bad timing for Georgia?
The Bulldogs are currently recruiting some of the top quarterbacks in the 2026 class. Thee best of the best, at least when it comes to the rankings, is on campus. Five-star quarterback Jared Curtis is currently in Athens for a multi-day visit. Van Gorder has played a key role in Curtis’ recruitment to Georgia.
But the argument can also be made that Georgia would rather have him on its campus during this time as opposed to anywhere else. The Nashville Christian signal caller is expected to see practices on Thursday and Saturday before he leaves town. He was in Oregon earlier this week. The Bulldogs are Ducks make up his final two schools.
