ATHENS, Ga – Georgia got a two-for-one deal on Friday in their home opener in the newly renovated Foley Field.

The Bulldogs picked up wins number five and six on Friday by sweeping their doubleheader against the University of Chicago Illinois. One of the two games played on Friday was originally scheduled for Thursday. ‘Extreme weather’ conditions (wind and cold temperatures) pushed the home opener back a day.

Game one saw Georgia take home the 9-3 win. Senior Slate Alford posted a career-best four hits. Alford cleared the bases and drove in three runs with a triple in his second at-bat of the day. UNC Asheville transfer Robbie Burnett made a splash in his Foley Field debut.

He drove in three runs and hit his first home run as a Bulldog in game one.

Duke transfer Devin Obee also drove in two runs in his first game as Bulldog at Foley Field. He also scored a run.

The Bulldogs also got production from Nolan McCarthy and Tre Phelps who scored two runs a piece. Phelps walked twice while McCarthy went 1-for-4 on the day.

Georgia had 10 hits in the game as a unit.

Georgia started Charlie Goldstein on the mound. Goldstein is still working up to things as he was out after 15 pitches on Friday. He struck out two batters in one inning of work.

The pitcher record was Zach Brown who threw 56 pitches across four innings. Brown collected seven strikeouts, allowing two hits and one earned run.

Georgia rolls in game two

Game two saw a lot of the same. Georgia came away with the 15-1 win in a run-rule shortened game.

The second inning allowed the Bulldogs to blow things open a bit. Georgia put up six runs all with two outs. The big strike came from Ryland Zaborowski.

The Miami (Ohio) transfer smashed a grand slam on the first pitch he saw in game two into left field to open up a 6-0 lead. Zaborowski had four hits and drove in six total runs in game two.

Freshman Cade Brown got in on the action in the third inning with his first college home run. Georgia finished the day with 15 hits as a unit in game two.

Junior starting pitcher Leighton Finley posted a strong second outing of 2025. He pitched the first four 2/3 innings of the outing without allowing a hit. Finley threw five innings, allowed two hits, no runs and earned his first win of the season.

Wes Johnson gets a peek

Johnson entered the weekend hoping to see as much of his roster as he could. He got his wish on Friday.

“We got contributions from a lot of guys and we’re still not where I want to be offensively,” Johnson told reporters. “Last weekend, it was tough conditions, you had to play defense for 36 innings. You couldn’t mix and match and go offense. Today was the first game where we got to do that. You started to see some guys. It was good. We still have a long way to go but it was a step in the right direction tonight.”

One of the new additions, Zaborowski had the chance to make his splash in his home opener at Foley.

The depth Georgia has down in the seven, eighth and ninth spots were on display on Friday. Georgia got eight runs batted in from that group in game two.

“Any time you get production from the bottom of the order is (good),” Johnson said. “Any time your seven, eight and nine can pick you up, its massive with the length of our season.”

What’s next?

Georgia has two more in this home opening weekend with UIC. The Bulldogs hit the road to Atlanta mid-week to face Georgia State on Wednesday.

Georgia will be back in Foley Field next weekend for a three-game set with Florida Gulf Coast.
