Tuesday’s game for Georgia had a different tenure but it was still the same sweet song. Georgia baseball won its 16th straight game 8-6 over East Tennessee State at Foley Field.

The Bulldogs didn’t get the offensive explosion they have been used to, at least from a hits perspective. Georgia had scored 185 runs in the 19 games prior to Tuesday.

The Bulldogs managed five hits to best the 12-3 Southern Conference foes. They capitalized on the ESTU mistakes. UGA loaded the bases in the first inning with walks alone.

Sophomore Tre Phelps delivered the big blow with a single that drove in two runs in the bottom of the first. Phelps also drove in a run in the bottom of the fifth inning though he did not get an RBI because it was a double play.

ETSU tied the game on a wild pitch from Georgia in the 7th. The Bulldogs took the lead back for good in the bottom half without getting a hit. Georgia had two batters hit by pitch, two walks and a balk, bringing in two runs in the frame.

Georgia’s eighth inning looked a lot more familiar. A two-run home run from Nolan McCarthy helped the Bulldogs pull away a bit more. Phelps drove in his third run of the day with a sac fly to close out the scoring.

Georgia pitching wins the day

The Bulldogs tied together their innings on the mound from a committee of pitchers.

JT Quinn got the start. He went one inning. Georgia also used Justin Byrd, Lucas Morici, Paul Farley, Nate Taylor, Eric Hammond, Davis Chastain, Zach Harris and Brian Zaldin to cover the nine innings on Tuesday.

ETSU put up 10 hits and six runs on Georgia’s pitching staff. Georgia head coach Wes Johnson went into the day with a plan. All nine pitchers knew they’d get the ball on Tuesday, but they’d all have a 30-pitch limit. Tuesday served as bullpen sessions for each.

Johnson believes the staff got what it needed out of Tuesday.

“Our pitching will be fully reset by Friday, I thought we threw the ball well,” Johnson told reporters postgame. “Nobody is down. I called in all nine guys and told them they’re getting the ball at some point today.”

Georgia will begin SEC play on Friday night against Kentucky at Foley Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. The two teams will play on Saturday and Sunday as well. Kentucky is currently 12-2 and is hosting Northern Illinois today. That game is still in progress.
