Georgia Baseball gets back in the win column after weekend sweep
Georgia Baseball was able to come up with a five-run win over Georgia State on Tuesday despite the Dawgs only scoring in two innings. Scott Stricklin’s squad plated five in the second plus another three in the sixth on their way to an 8-3 victory over the Panthers at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, Ga. – home to the Gwinnett Stripers.
Leighton Finley got the start for Georgia and went 2.1 innings. Finley gave up two runs on three hits, striking out two of the 11 batters he faced. That damage all came in the third after the Bulldogs had already gotten on the board. Mason LaPlante singled through the right side to score Cole Wagner. Then, LaPlante – plus Sebastian Murillo – came home on a double to right by Justin Thomas. That made it 3-0, still without any outs in the inning.
Georgia wasn’t done quite yet. Thomas crossed home on another single through the right side by Ben Anderson, then Anderson scored on a fly out to center field from Corey Collins. Anderson’s hit prompted a pitching change, and he advanced to third on a hit by Charlie Condon up the middle. By the time it was all said and done, Georgia led 5-0.
The middle innings of the game were relatively quiet. Georgia State went down in order in the fourth, fifth and sixth. That was courtesy of strong pitching from Chandler Marsh and Dalton Rhadans. Georgia tacked on three itself in the sixth after loaded the based with one out. Thomas and Anderson each scored for a second time while Connor Tate crossed home on a ground by by Collins, his second RBI.

Kyle Greenler, Zach DeVito and Matthew Hoskins each threw an inning. DeVito got beat up a bit in the eighth with back to back singles, a balk and another single to score the runner from third. However, he ended the inning with a strike out and a ground out to escape without further damage, bringing the game to what would be the final score of 8-3.
Georgia, now 14-7 on the season, had dropped three straight entering Tuesday night’s contest after being swept by South Carolina over the weekend including a pair of run rule losses. Now it’s back to the SEC schedule and a test on the road against Auburn, the only league opponent on the schedule remaining that is not ranked according to the most recent poll from D1Baseball.
