Georgia Baseball got a big win on Saturday, evening its weekend series against a top-25 Tennessee team and moving its SEC record one game closer to the mark in mind to make the NCAA Tournament later this month. Behind a strong pitching performance out of the bullpen from Jarvis Evans and Chandler Marsh, the Bulldogs come out on top over the Volunteers 3-1.

Georgia took an early lead in the first inning on a double to center field from Connor Tate. That scored Charlie Condon from first base and put the Bulldogs up 1-0. It came after an eventful top half of the first inning when starting pitcher Charlie Goldstein suffered an injury facing the first batter of the game and had to be replaced on the fly by true freshman Jarvis Evans.

Georgia added to its lead in the third inning when Tate picked up his second RBI of the game, flying out to center field and scoring Ben Anderson. Condon reached third with just one out but the Bulldogs were not able to get him home with a strike out and a fly out to end the inning.

Condon didn’t need any help his next at bat. Instead, he hit his 20th home run of the season – tying a Georgia freshman record – in the fifth to give Georgia a 3-0 lead. Condon would finish the day 2-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and two runs scored. Tate on the other hand went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and a walk as well.

Meanwhile, on the mound, Evans continued to take care of business. Going 5.1 innings before handing it over to Chandler Marsh, Evans struck out seven, allowed only three hits with one run and two walks. After loading the bases with just one away in the sixth, Evans was replaced by Marsh who walked the first batter he faced. However, he would get out of the jam and go on to put together his own strong outing with six strikeouts.

“It definitely was a wakeup call because Charlie (Goldstein) came out so early,” Evans said. “Once we got in there and settled down, it was just like a regular start. It is what I am used to doing. Going into tomorrow, game three, we have to try and win the series, we are playing the best baseball we can.”

“This was a big win, we’re banged up and found a way to get a win. We got to get a hit with runners in scoring position” Georgia head baseball coach Scott Stricklin added. “Connor Tate and Charlie Condon have been really good for us. We need some other guys to step up. When that happens, it’s contagious and the next guy can do it. Bottom line, we scored enough to win, and it’s a big one. Hopefully we get momentum and bring it in tomorrow.”

First pitch of Sunday’s series finale is set for 1:00 p.m. ET on SEC Network+. Georgia’s starter remains TBA while Tennessee will go with sophomore righty Drew Beam.
