Game two for Georgia’s series against Oklahoma looked a lot like the second half of game one on Thursday night, except the Bulldogs held on for a 10-9 victory to move to 34-11, 11-9 in SEC play.

The Bulldogs came out on fire at the plate. Georgia got six runs in the first two innings. Tre Phelps’ second home run of the series added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Oklahoma took a page out of Georgia’s book from game one. The Sooners chipped away until they landed a combination of two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and another two in the seventh.

Georgia’s pitching got off to a good start. Starter Kolten Smith took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Things shifted in that inning. He was out after 4.2 and was tagged with the two runs the Sooners scored.

The Georgia bullpen then allowed seven more over the next three innings to evaporate Georgia’s lead.

The Key moment

Georgia made the call to take Brian Zeldin out after two runs had already crossed in the top of the eighth. Zach Harris came out of the bullpen to strike out Kyle Branch to get Georgia off the field.

That moment sent the Bulldogs to the plate with a 10-9 lead. Harris was able to take care of the Sooners’ lineup in the ninth after only allowing a single. He picked up the save on the day.

Key Performers

Alford: 2-for-3, 4 RBI, two walks, two runs scored.

Phelps: 1-for-4 home run, 3 RBI and a run scored

What did Wes Johnson say?

A win is a win, but things need to improve as a whole

“We came out today, I mean, let’s be real, we didn’t play up well at the end of the day,” Johnson told reporters after the game. “We’re starting to do some things better than what we were doing earlier in the year. We lost a lot of on defense today, all on the defensive side. The offense was okay, we still missed some fastballs, I’m not going to lie to you. We’ve got things to improve on, but you never apologize for the win.”

Fix the little things

“I tell them all the time, don’t mistake caring and wanting to win and all those things. We just have to get on it,” Johnson said. “You can try too hard.  You can try too hard and make mistakes. We were doing that a little bit at times because the guys do care and they want to win and they want to beat everybody, which is that’s great. Now it’s our job as coaches to get them back into that lane of just competing at the level.”

What’s next?
