Georgia’s 4-3 loss at Clemson on Tuesday put the Bulldogs past the halfway point of the College Baseball regular season at 22-7 overall with a 6-3 record in the SEC. Scott Stricklin’s club currently sits in the top 20 of all the industry’s rankings, coming in as high as No. 10 in the USA Today Sports Top 25 Coaches Poll. Collegiate Baseball ranks Georgia No. 13, D1Baseball has the Bulldogs at No. 14 while Baseball America and Perfect Game have them at No. 17. Either way, it’s a top 20 stamp of approval on what the team has done up to this point.

With that has also come recognition of Georgia for the NCAA Tournament. On Wednesday, both D1Baseball and Baseball America released their latest postseason projections, predicting the Bulldogs to be hosting a regional in Athens when the time comes. Both also have Florida State as the No. 2 seed and College of Charleston as the No. 4 seed, only differing on who the fourth team in the pairing would be as well as where Georgia’s national standing would be among regional hosts. D1Baseball projects Georgia as the No. 9 overall seed with Mercer taking the No. 3 seed in the regional while Baseball America has the Bulldogs a little bit lower at No. 14 with Georgia Southern in the region.

Jonathan Cannon

Fueling the first half success for the Bulldogs has been Friday night starting pitcher Jonathan Cannon. A 6-foot-6, 213-pound native of Alpharetta, Ga., Cannon is among the top pitchers not only in the SEC, but the entire country. He ranks among league leaders in several categories with a 6-1 record and 1.71 ERA in 47.1 innings pitched and seven starts. Cannon has struck out 46 batters to just three walks, and on Tuesday, he was named to the midseason watch list for the Golden Spikes Award, given annually to the top amateur baseball player in the country. This year’s watch list includes 45 players with 26 of them playing their way onto the watch list since the preseason list was announced. The selection committee will continue to maintain a rolling list of athletes, meaning that Cannon’s spot is still up for grabs, before they announce semifinalists on May 24.

Cannon and the Bulldogs are back in action this weekend as they hit the road to take on South Carolina. First pitch on Friday is set for 7:00 p.m. ET on SEC Network+. Game times for Saturday and Sunday are 4:00 p.m. ET and 12:00 p.m. ET on SEC Network+ and SEC Network respectively.
