Georgia Baseball players receive All-American, All-Region nods

Georgia Baseball’s Jack Gowen was named a First-Team All-American on Wednesday by the National College Baseball Writers Association. Meanwhile, Jonathan Cannon came in on the Third-Team.

Also announced on Wednesday was the Southeast All-Region teams from the American Baseball Coaches Association and Rawlings where Cannon was on the first-team while Gowen, along with Cole Tate, were second-team selections.

Gowen served as Georgia’s top relief pitcher coming out of the bullpen this past season, saving 10 games for the Bulldogs. The Folkston, Ga. native also went 2-0 with a 2.39 ERA. He was named one of 10 finalists for the NCBWA’s Stopper of the Year Award given to the best relief pitching in Division I Baseball.

Cannon, also named a Third-Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball and a First-Team All-SEC selection according to the league’s 14 head coaches, anchored Georgia’s pitching rotation all season long. He ended the regular season with the most victories in the SEC with a 9-4 mark and a 4.02 ERA. Cannon was a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy and was on the midseason watch list for the Golden Spikes Award. He is considered one of the top draft prospects for the 2022 MLB Draft set to take place in July.

As for Tate, the Bishop, Ga. native led Georgia with a .359 batting average in 42 starts. He hit seven double, two triples and six home runs as he ended the season on an 11-game hitting streak. Tate hit a team-best 455 in the Chapel Hill Regional of the NCAA Baseball Tournament.

Georgia ended its season with a 36-23 overall record and a 15-15 record in the SEC. The Bulldogs finished second in the SEC East behind No. 1 overall seed Tennessee before being eliminated by host North Carolina in the Chapel Hill Regional, going 1-2.
